As a storm, Harvey broke records. As a hurricane, not so much.

Too many people overlook that what MOST of the region got was NOT a hurricane. We didn't have WIND damage. We had rain from a system that stalled and moved slower than grandma using her walker. Seriously...at times, Harvey moved less than two miles per hour.

Even with 30+ inches of rain at the lake house (north of Houston on Lake Conroe), I had pool noodles that never even moved during the rains.

As to Irma, it is interesting that so many of the charts people use for 'record' windspeeds that they want to lay at the foot of 'climate change' contain storms that happened 30+ years ago. In other words, massive storms happen.

That being said, I can only advise that those in the projected path of Irma get to planning and get out if they can. Remember also that landfall projections can change more than once...Harvey had THREE separate landfalls as a storm, although only one was as a hurricane. And once it left the Houston area to go back over the Gulf, it briefly looked like it was going to turn and hit Houston a second time.

I'm just hoping Katia becomes the nothing that Jose was projected to be when it was supposed to be Jose in the Gulf...

I'm pretty impressed with the state government here. They really are pretty organized. Obviously, you can only do so much but I think they are doing just that.

They have gas tankers making sure there aren't shortages and truckloads of water for the same reason. They have infrastructure (electricity etc.) waiting to get to work. They really seem to have their act together.

I'm supposed to be in Charleston, SC from Sunday-Wednesday and not loving the updated projections.

Is it hurricane season yet?

Anyone concerned with the fact FEMA is basically out of money and just had to get a bill passed to help with Harvey. So are they gonna need another bill to help with IRMA? Is that gonna delay the help and prepardness for FEMA for Florida?

Not trying to politicize ITT, just curious about how this will affect the federal response for Irma.

Harvey flooded like crazy because it did a U-turn over Houston, just basically staying put and dumping tons of water. Harvey's flooding was also very photogenic because Houston *uses* its major roads to channel water.

If you believe the President of Antigua and Barbuda, Irma just killed half the population of Barbuda. Probably an exaggeration, an emotional outburst, but still.

The 5:00 update hasn't changed the predicted storm track much, if any.

I live in Fort Lauderdale (a half mile west of mandatory evacuation line in my country that begins tomorrow at noon). Caught a break as 1 month ago i booked a flight to go visit some friends in NJ/PA this weekend so as long as flight doesn't get cancelled tomorrow night I won't be here for it. Current scheduled flight back is Monday afternoon , thinking that flight will be cancelled if we get a direct hit.

South Florida has to be ready. It's basically inside the 3 day cone now and the accuracy is much better within 72 hours than it is 120 hours. The models are shifting east and west but it's basically just noise at this point.

NHC is saying 145-160 mph when it's near landfall but the ocean between Cuba and Florida is 90 degrees. It's like jet fuel. No idea how this is gonna weaken from 185 to 145 going over that warm water.

FEMA is never budgeted for this kind of thing. It is budgeted for its operating budget. It always takes an additional appropriation to fund disaster response. Nothing to see here.

I believe the Georgia coast has never had a hurricane make land there - we'll see if they continue the run-good.

Current projected track basically has it plowing into Miami and then raking up the entire east coast. That seems pretty worst case scenario to me.

Not running over Hispanola and Cuba is really bad for Florida.

This isn't accurate, but that doesn't matter.

btw, NOAA has a pretty neat historical tracker of hurricane paths.

JetBlue is offering $99 flights. Increased routes and bigger planes out of Florida to Atlanta. Option for those of you who still want to get out.

maybe it was a Cat 4 or higher. I remember reading an article a few years ago about a woman working in insurance trying to predict property damage risk and if you went by pure historical numbers you would greatly underestimate Georgia's risk
