I never even heard of them before today. I got there through trying to figure out why when I buy yellow dole bananas they seem to last forever before going bad compared to when I buy unripe green bananas at Costco that last less than a week

That's like 100 out of 2 million people. And I am shocked and outraged to not see myself on the list.

SGR 1806-20, a magnetar 50,000 light years away from Earth which exploded in 2004, and despite being only 12 miles in diameter, released more energy in 1/10 of a second than our Sun has in 100,000 years.

The Pioneer Anomaly.

The Pioneer spacecraft is not moving as quickly as it should.

"When all known forces acting on the spacecraft are taken into consideration, a very small but unexplained force remains."

Known gravitational theories do not account for the craft's trajectory.

yeah, I like how one explanation for it is "new physics"

I guess that sounds better than "how the **** should we know"

My guess is something "mundane". Only because it is very hard to come up with something else that isn't contradicted by other observations....

Dark matter pretty much competely doesn't work because the effect would show up on lots of other things. But, a mundane explanation (e.g. gas leak, assymetrical heat radiation) is pretty hard to believe considering that it's been observed definitively in two different objects and a few other objects have shown some signs of the same anomaly, though they're not statistically significant.

(Guess who has two thumbs and spelled anomaly right on the first try??!)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_vacuum

can't really understand much, but it's a nice read nevertheless:

''The possibility that we are living in a false vacuum has been considered. If a bubble of lower energy vacuum were nucleated, it would approach at nearly the speed of light and destroy the Earth instantaneously, without any forewarning. Thus, this vacuum metastability event is a theoretical doomsday event.''

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinook_wind

Non-Canadians might not be familiar with the Chinook Winds. It's a phenomenon in Central Canada that changes a winter landscape into summer for a few hours to day.

Quote:
Chinook winds have been observed to raise winter temperature, often from below −20°C (−4°F) to as high as 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) for a few hours or days, then temperatures plummet to their base levels.

OOT life tricks thread reminded me of the Spanish flu pandemic. I learned about this fairly recently and it seems not to be widely known for some reason, perhaps because the two world wars and Bolshevik revolution from around that time dominate history classes and discussion.

Never heard of this (live in the Midwest, so no major mountains here). Pretty interesting. Gotta say it must be nice to get a break and a good way to melt snow, but also must be a pain in the ass with such quick temperature fluctuations.
