http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overtoun_Bridge

Quote:
The Overtoun Bridge is an arch bridge located near Milton, Dumbarton, Scotland, over the Overtoun Burn. It has gained public attention because of the unusually large number of dogs that have allegedly leaped to their deaths over a number of decades.[1]
...
The long leap from the bridge onto the waterfalls of the Overtoun Estate almost always results in immediate death. Inexplicably, some dogs have actually survived, recuperated, and then returned to the site to jump again.

Probably the weirdest video game series ever: Atari's Swordquest

Quote:
Contest

Out of 5,000 entries, only eight people managed to find all five of the correct clues. Of those eight, Steven Bell, who was 20 and lived near Detroit at the time, took first place and won the "Talisman of Penultimate Truth."

The Talisman was made of 18K solid gold, with 12 diamonds and the birthstones of the twelve Zodiac signs embedded in it, as well as a small sword made of white gold attached to the front. At the time of the contest, the Talisman was valued at $25,000.
Here's a video about the series from the "Angry Video Game Nerd"

to go along with the video game theme, here is one of the worst video game of all time.

The game is frequently cited as a contributing factor to Atari's massive financial losses during 1983 and 1984, and an unspecified number of unsold copies of the game are said to have contributed to the video game industry crisis of 1983. As a result of overproduction and returns, unsold cartridges were buried in a New Mexico landfill.

Lifted a 2,800 lb anchor chest-height. I mean, even if this is a huge exaggeration it's still completely ridiculous.

Somehow I don't think the commies were big fans of an armed populace.

How much do you think he could lift?

Last night I read more about late-'70s/early-'80s video game systems then I'll ever need to know. I never thought the "Video Game Crash of 1983" would ever take up mental real estate in my brain.

Interesting stuff though. Had no idea Atari went all the way back to 1977. And that Nintendo had a product back in the mid-70s. First video game "tennis for two" was a cathode ray tube back in 1958. Pretty amazing that the NES shipped 60 million units. Starting only 2 years after The Video Game Crash of 1983

I mean, I have no idea. I guess the world deadlift record is around 1000 lbs? This sounds like a deadlift plus a little extra with just the arms. Even if they were exaggerating by 1000 lbs, it's still nuts. I would say I don't believe it at all, but then again if the guy really was in the ballpark of 7' 9" 500 lbs, who knows.

I mean the numbers don't mean much to me. Somebody has to have been the strongest human in modern history. Even if those stories are largely false he could still be that dude. His chest was 80" around which... is just silly. Lifting a horse over a 4'-0" fence lol. Those Worlds Strongest Man contests are full of guys about 6'5" 330 so this dude was obviously insanely larger than those guys, who are already ridiculously big.

I'm not disagreeing with you--I'm saying it's likely trueish and even if the anchor only weighed what they said it's still holy ****.

Got turned on to the subject by this week's New Yorker, but for those non-snobs who don't read the New Yorker, here is a good one:

Operation Mincemeat

"Operation Mincemeat was a successful British deception plan during World War II. As part of the widespread deception plan Operation Barclay to cover the intended invasion of Italy from North Africa, Mincemeat helped to convince the German high command that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia in 1943 instead of Sicily, the actual objective. This was accomplished by persuading the Germans that they had, by accident, intercepted "top secret" documents giving details of Allied war plans. The documents were attached to a corpse deliberately left to wash up on a beach in Punta Umbría (Spain). "

(Not wikipedia but it fits the subject) I'm not sure how familiar people are with Mental Floss, but it's a site that consolidates a lot of this kind of stuff into a bunch of daily blog posts and stories. www.mentalfloss.com

They link to other sites in their blog sometimes too. Here's a post from today I found interesting - "6 people you've never heard of who probably saved your life."
