Duh, yes!

Place in the North End called Umberto’s has the best arancini (& Siciliano pizza).

I think you're going to get a lot of "I know those things and have had them but didn't know what they were called" responses

Didn’t know. Looked up after answering poll. I have had them but was not familiar with name.

I feel like this is going to be the most popular response.

Sure, I know who Avicii was. What does that have to do with eating, though?

I didn't know what they were and haven't had them. When I Googled and saw them, at first glance, they looked like papas rellenas (stuffed potato balls) to me, which are great. I imagine that the Italian version is great as well.

More importantly though, did Howard lose a $500 dinner to you, or was it a $500 scotch?

I've been eating them since I was a little kid though it's only in the last 10 years I've heard them called arancini commonly in English.

All the Italian-American immigrants I've known/dealth with in Brooklyn call them rice balls unless they're speaking in Italian.

No one (and by 'no one' I mean Italian Americans) in the Boston area calls them rice balls.

They are the size and have the appearance of oranges, hence arancini.

Precisely this. LOL @ rice balls. I thought these were a fairly common appetizer, no? Pretty surprised many people haven't heard of/had them.

lol "Boston." That's cute. REAL Italian Americans on the East Coast (NY/NJ/CT?DC) call them rice balls.

Who gives a crap what those weirdos in Beat Town call it?

You DO know the North End of Boston is the oldest Italian immigrant area on the East Coast, right Professore Domenico?

I have highlighted the worst part of your bad post.

Only aracini I've ever had were about the size of a golf ball, not a goddam orange!

Delicious though.

And excuse me Mr. Tripod, do you or do you not reside in Las Vegas? The town that gets its Italian food from Todd Brunson.

Then those aren't arancini, those are appetizers, mini arancini.

I'll show you what the real ones look like. (that's what she said)

I'm sure I'll regret this, but I might as well (sort of) add the (quasi) Rhode Island view.

Federal Hill > The North End, but pretty much any random place in North Jersey >> Federal Hill.

OK, for full disclosure, born and raised in NJ, Boston from college until 2003, Rhode Island since then.

Hmmm sounds like I need to visit Federal Hill. I've never been there. The only thing noteworthy I've tried in RI is their coffee milk, which I had by accident when I ordered an iced coffee there.

I'll take your word about NJ as the only food I've ever eaten there was in a casino or on the boardwalk. I wonder how much real Italian food is available to college students. I'm guessing not much.

It's a ball of rice that has a meat/pea/tomato/cheese mixture in the very center. It's rolled in bread crumbs and then deep fried to a golden color.

I just walked by Umberto's, was going to snap a pic, but that darn mom & pop shop closes at 2:30pm every day. Why? Because they're THAT good.

I have made these a thousand times, except I never knew they had a fancy Italian name and I scandalously make them with any old rice instead of making a risotto first and treating it like leftovers. My recipe (sans the risotto) is basically identical to the one on Allrecipies and was handed down to me by my Irish Mother with the much less classy name of "Rice Balls."
