Am I an ******* for thinking it's annoying/narcissistic for it to apparently be a "thing" today for service members and former service members to change their profile pics to them in uniform? Even if they deserve it, isn't that pretty much begging people to comment on it and tell them how awesome they are?

Not at all. As a veteran myself, I think it's just attention whoring.

Well sure, but it's relatively benign. Just having a facebook and posting anything makes us all narcissistic on some level. For many veterans, being a veteran is central to their identity. Might be more narcissistic to scroll through and chuckle derisively at all the stupid veterans and how you are better than them because posting such a pic is sooo beneath you, then run to the internet for a little group-think pat on the back...

Narcissistic? Yes. Should it bother you? Probably not.

It doesn't bother me because, like you said, all FB is narcissistic on some level. I just think this example is quite blatant. See thread title

ya its a little narcissistic. its definitely 100x worse to feel that way enough to talk about it. one day a year people in the military change their photo on a social networking website. oh the humanity.

Please remind them it's disrespectful to put up their Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving, it's showing they don't care about farmers.

You two know we're in a thread talking about things posted on facebook that are narcissistic, right? And that it hasn't ruined my day or made me take up a cause against or? Or post it on facebook or anywhere else than in a thread talking about narcissistic facebook posts where veteran's day posts have already been discussed?

Sure. Being annoyed by it is the part I was taking issue with. I've seen a number of said profile pics and I just thought "oh that's cool, didn't know they served," or thanked them for their service, or scrolled by absentmindedly. Never really crossed my mind to be annoyed at any of them. I went a little over the top making the point though, sorry for being prickish.

"Annoyed" to described my feelings is also a little hyperbolic. I mostly just thought it was funny/interesting that on a day to honor veterans (who do indeed deserve to be honored) that you would draw attention to the fact that you are one of those people who deserve to be honored. Family members posting pics of their loved ones in uniform? Makes sense. Posting a group photo of you with your armed forces buddies in uniform? Also makes sense, to a degree. Posting a selfie of you in uniform? I just think that's off.

Have noticed the trend that the three guys who changed up their **** to army selfies served a few years in the coast guard, air force, and army reserve and never deployed.

The guys I know who have done a tour or two have walls filled with pics of them posted by family members but haven't changed their pictures, ymmv.
