So many reasons to hate this.

-Typical lack of understanding of how taxes work.
-It was military income, which comes with huge tax breaks. His gross income was probably between 40-50k. And his effective tax rate was probably something like 5%.

no, it means he's jealous of people who get $3000 back. his lack of understanding is that he doesn't get that its better to not overpay than to have too much of your money taken and later returned.

^^ That, plus the lack of understanding that your refund amount means almost nothing in regards to your tax situation, and the thing that does matter (effective tax rate) is lower for him than almost anyone with a paying job but he's still upset for some reason.
