Quote:
from my cousin who breaks up/makes up with her guy at least 2 times per month

One day you WILL realise you did wrong & you WILL realise what you lost, & by then i won't care anymore
she posts that exact same message at least once per month. every single time without fail, she receives replies from my aunties, her friends "you stay strong!" "he's an ******* good for you!"

she's blocked from my news feed, but once in a while i check in to see if anything has changed =/

I've been stealing the **** out of these quotes, since I haven't seen any of my friends post them. And some are pretty lulz.

well, companies could also douse you in gasoline and light you on fire during your interview, but that wouldnt be legal either. Just because they can do something doesnt mean that it can legally impact your employment.

Okay well in no way is it "completely standard" and on top of that you have to be within the range of someone's wi-fi broadcast, which also means they have to be logging in via wireless connection.

Hopefully that's the end of this discussion, but yes, Firesheep is pretty serious biz.

The relevant point (to the original argument) is that there are still lots of good reasons to use a slightly non-standard name on Facebook. And potential employers are far from the only reason.

Pretty much every single person I know has dozens of pictures of them drinking/clubbing/with girls. None of these make a good impression when your boss does even the most cursory of checks. When I was applying to grad schools I basically scrubbed my entire web presence clean and there's still random Google cache'd pictures of me licking salt off boobs all over the net.

Companies have very different standards for conduct that they think is appropriate for their employees.

As a fairly extreme example there was a teacher that was fired just for having a picture of herself holding a beer (not on school property, not with students, nothing else other than holding alcohol).

If a place is so insane they're going to care about my facebook pictures as part of the hiring process, I cannot imagine I'd ever want to work there anyway.

Once all the dinos who basically don't grasp the internet get old enough that they're not the ones making these sorts of policy decisions, I think things get a lot better.

Millersville University, in a motion asking the court to dismiss the case, contends that Ms. Snyder’s student teaching had been unsatisfactory for many reasons. But it affirms that she was dismissed and barred from re-entering the school shortly after the high school staff discovered her MySpace photograph. The university backed the school authorities’ contentions that her posting was “unprofessional” and might “promote under-age drinking.” It also cited a passage in the teacher’s handbook that said staff members are “to be well-groomed and appropriately dressed.”

This wasn't the story I was thinking of (it was in Canada) but seems relevant anyway.

Edit: Misread the article. Suing might get her somewhere.

Ashley Payne?

"According to CBS, Ashley Payne, a 24-year old Georgia teacher, was Facebook Fired when parents complained about her pictures of her drinking wine on a European Vacation:"

Well, she wasn't fired now was she? And her suspension wouldn't have been based solely on a picture of wine now would it?

prohornblower: What exactly is your point?

It seems to be that most people shouldn't worry about privacy settings on Facebook.

You said a teacher got fired for posting a picture of her holding a beer when she was off-duty on her facebook. I don't think that's true.

To be clear, I do think potential employers could dig up FB info on a candidate and see something that turns them off (politard ranting, getting drunk multiple times a week, etc.). This might lead to them not hiring you and you'd never know as they would say "We've decided to go in another direction" or some **** and that's that. But being fired is a completely different story.

Also, I want to know what you guys are posting on your FB that you think drastically decreases the chance you get a job that you are otherwise qualified for?

Meh, I'm not going to sit here and argue over tiny little details. In terms of this discussion (about FB privacy) it doesn't seem very useful to make a big distinction between being Fired or Suspended without pay or forced to resign, or not hired for a job. They all amount to the same thing - you could have been receiving a paycheck and now you're either in court (where best case you get your job back, but future advancement is pretty limited) or looking for a new job.

It's pretty obvious from the examples above (and basic common sense) that showing fairly tame pictures of drinking or gambling or other 'vices' can cause you employment difficulties. It's also pretty obvious that having students or exes or crazy stalkers being able to see your Facebook can make your life more difficult.

Edit: And as for your last question, read the articles. Some people have problems because of anti-religion comments, some people have problems because of the way they're dressed in pictures, some people have problems because they're consuming alcohol.

There are lots of personal activities that I partake in that are perfectly legal and socially acceptable that I still wouldn't tell a potential employer about because you don't know how they'll react. Seems like common sense and I'm not sure why someone above the age of 16 would argue that...

Because it's a newborn and she's announcing the birth.
