I do think there is merit to this, but also this:
People with perception/awareness tend to analyze what makes people make these updates in the first place. The result of this analysis is often unflattering to the FB status poster eg: low intelligence, pseudo intelligence, narcissism, humble bragging, shallowness etc. The motives can also be positive though, like making people laugh and just wanting to share articles/youtubes.
So basically...reading things like FB posts, and old school reading peoples AIM away messages, can give insight into that person (even though they weren't meaning to or they were trying to send off a different vibe than received)
