Also, don't most people hate their job and do it for the sole benefit of getting money? It's not the type of analogy I would think someone would want to make in connection to parenting.

I know a lot of people who don't hate their job. I don't hate mine.

I guess that makes me a salesperson AND the president of Amber Household LLC.

If someone considers assembling legos with their kid a job, I think they are doing it wrong.
I don't think you really understand just how much work can go into looking after a family. I'm not saying I agree with the sentiment of "OMG yay, I'm person of the year for doing chores!" but I also don't think completely writing it off as easy or not of the same caliber as going to a physical job is right either. And really, it's the attitude of, "You just play with legos all day, that's not work" breads the mantra of, "I have the hardest job in the world"

I agree it is a lot of work. Especially if you have say 2 little kids and the husband works long hours and doesn't help much when home. Also having a parent home all the time makes a big difference in a kid's life Like you said it's nothing to laud yourself about on FB though.

Gizmo, I agree that people underestimate the amount of work that stay-at-home parents do.

However, the point is that it's rarely more than a parent that isn't a stay-at-home parent does.

I don't think anybody thinks being a stay at home Mom is a cakewalk. Any non-idiot knows it's a lot of work, more than most 9-5 jobs. However, you don't get paid for it, so calling it a job is dumb, and doing so on facebook just seems like a cry for attention and affirmation.

Oh no, I agree. Working parents have it really, really tough and I honestly don't know how people manage it. (My selfish brain won't let me imagine what that life would be like)

I definitely agree with this, too.
I took it as Amber saying that being a home-maker isn't that much different than working a 9-5 and coming home to your cats. That people shouldn't expect to be applauded for keeping a house clean, etc. I may have missed the mark, though.

I agree that being a 24-7 stay-at-home parent is more work than doing a 40 hour/week job. But it's generally much easier than working 40 hours/week and then spending the rest of the time being a parent.

Edit: So, yeah, being a parent is hard. I think we can all agree that people that expect sympathy about it on Facebook are tools.

Bonus question: ask her how many times she has jilled off to a serial killer.

I'm not saying that taking care of a family isn't work, of course it is. It isn't a job though. I have friends that have jobs and children. They get out of work, go home, make dinner, do dishes, throw in a load of laundry, help with homework, give their kids a bath, and go to bed.

They wake up and make breakfast, do more dishes, make beds, etc. etc.

To say "I have a job as a stay at home mom" just doesn't cut it. Sure, it is work, but in my opinion it isn't a job. Someone chose to have a child and now takes care of it. How is that a job?

Not trying to be argumentative so I apologize if it seems that way. I just don't see how someone can even remotely compare having the luxury of being able to be a stay at home full time parent to having a job, when there are so many people out there who would love to be in a position like that.

It isn't like most people who work have full time nannies, live in housekeepers, and cooks on staff to care for their families.

Every week this guy posts a link to vote for Casey Abrams on American Idol. I find it weird. Though he usually posts stuff I like such as links to space photos or videos. I don't know who Casey Abrams is but I get tired of seeing his bearded face on my fb every week. He looks kinda like Bob Ross.

Re how hard it is to stay at home with kid(s) V a job. It obviously depends on the kids and the job - but if the kid doesn't sleep in the day and there are no parents etc to give a few hours rest then it's really hard as you just can't relax. I look after my kid sometimes and generally I'm more in need of a rest when the wife gets home from work than if I'd been at work, but it varies a lot. I get why people don't like mums saying that what they do is a job but it's not like they are lounging around all day watching **** on TV.

I also find it annoying when a father posts "babysitting" as his status update, when he is really watching his own child. I have yet to hear a woman refer to taking care of her own offspring as babysitting.
