There's an episode late in Futurama where the Professor and an advanced Orangoutang are having an argument about evolution vs. creationism with the "missing link" as the basis of the argument. After the Professor has disproven the Orangoutang over and over again finally after being proven wrong like 100 times the Orangoutang basically makes up a "missing link" and uses it as an AHA moment that he was right and the Professor is completely wrong.



Exhausted and frustrated by the dumb argument the Professor proclaims "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" and leaves on his spaceship.



I have no intention of leaving where I am, anytime soon. However, when I think of sheltered white people living 3rd generation in a row in a sheltered suburb getting on the internet and getting deep into racial arguments and conflicts they only know from TV, Facebook and half paying attention in US History - it makes me not want to even interact with these people on a basic level anymore.

Generally speaking, That is an average American. Living, loving and staying in their small town. Focused on what happens in and affects their small area and applying those feelings to the rest of their giant nation.

On a larger scale it's pretty much how Californians act about everything all the time.

However on a personal scale when i think of some ultra sheltered white kid in idk Bloomington, Indiana posting on the Internet about slavery when their knowledge base is likely the half-ass attention they paid in 10th grade US History and their opinion set is (in my limited experience) has been witnessed to be "black people were slaves a long time ago, it sucks. Get over it."

I don't even want to start to take time bothering with that generation. That's what I was specifically saying.

A political meme my wife posted out of the blue sparked a ****storm on her feed between friends, in laws, and several families. I ended up finally talking to a family friend who has been clearly posting things from the other side than I sit on since the election and it was pretty astounding in the end. It started out terribad but eneded up being a profound experience as I was finally able to understand how it was possible to logically hold his position. I disagree but it also forced me to examine some of my shelters.

Don't know if any of you have access to intelligent people who disagree with your politics that you are willing to risk nuking your relationship with, but if you do it could be worth t.

This is what I'm trying to do with my Mom. We're both watching/reading agreed-upon news sources and trying to avoid the bubble stuff that angries up our blood. So no arguing politics here, on FB or twitter for me. Also no Daily Show and the like. No Drudge, Rush, FoxNews for her. We're going to try to talk every week, which is also a lot more often than we usually do. We'll see how it goes.
