I understand that blackface has a connotation to it, but is it really horrible if you're going as Lil Wayne to a costume party to make your skin look like his? Obv black isn't the color of his skin.

if the point is to put the joke on yourself you might get away with it. like when its always sunny had blackface. it was obvious that the point was what idiots the gang were for doing that,not to make fun of black people. but i doubt anyone going as lil wayne to a party is making themswlf the butt of the joke intentionally.

I see black comics dress like white people (with paint etc) in movies mostly and have not one twinge of irritation anger or anything. I'm sure when Natamus saw that movie he felt bad for white people out of principle.

I think the blackface thing is a bit different in America to the rest of the world, presumably because of the minstrel shows that used to be common. There was a five year old kid that ended up in the papers a while back after he went to a football match dressed as his favourite player. The player was happy to pose for pictures with the kid so he didn't seem to find it offensive. It's a pretty daft thing to do but I could easily believe that someone might do it without meaning to cause offence.

It's one of those things that everyone knows is offensive but nobody really remembers why.

If you're a kid dressing up as Kirby Puckett (me) i think it's fine. If you're trying to be a generic black person to have some fun with black person stereotypes it's not fine.

Short answer: minstrel shows. It's not like we as a country just woke up one day and said "that's it, no more black face." There was a long history of really racist performances of white people dressing up like black people, including dark makeup, that doesn't exist in the reverse. That's why it's way worse for white people to wear dark makeup to look black, then for black people to put on makeup to look white.

Then there is the general concept of punching up when poking fun at people. If you're a white guy making fun of women, minorities, gays or other groups who generally have a tougher go of it than you do, it's looked upon less favorably than if you're a gay black woman making fun of white guys.

Learn all the PC rules, learn them by heart!
