ALS vids are fine - the "I hope no one nominates me!" morons not so much.

On the $2 for the mickey mouse thing.... Somehow a while a go I liked my local area's buy/sell/swap. The **** that gets posted in there is ridiculous. Seen a few things for $0.50. There no way I could be bothered taking a picture of it, posting it on line, having to deal with people buying it and then finding a time when your home for someone to come pick it up. Just chuck it in the bin!

so people are shaming for donating instead of doing the ice

my wife is on these things basically to sell/trade kids clothes between all of the moms in our neighborhood. There was a lady on a local page like this that was selling 1/2 empty bottles of cleaning stuff, an already opened giant box of q-tips, among many other similar things. She would offer to drop them off at your house if you bought more than one thing, sometimes which would add up to barely a dollar.

The bucket challenge is nice but pretty sub-optimal because of some of these reasons but the water wasting argument is pretty silly. It's not like that water would have been transported to Africa otherwise. There's plenty of fresh water, it's largely a transportation issue.

Depends where you are when it comes to wasting water. It isn't a big deal if you're in Scotland, we get loads of the stuff. Might be somewhat different if you're in the Australian outback.

My dad uses something called freebay. If you've got a load of crap you don't need you advertise it on there for free. Quite a good idea, saves you the hassle of throwing something out as well as extending the life of whatever it is you don't want.

Other than the water wasting stuff it wasn't that bad.

In California transportation IS water. Also the more water LA uses the more Mono Lake and other reservoirs drain. We're not getting our water from some endless well.

That said, one day of golf course watering probably blows more than every ice bucket challenge that's ever happened.

Yeah I have given stuff away on Freecycle before, far superior to trying to sell it for a couple bucks. Accidentally left a lesbian porno in the VCR I gave away, so somebody got a great deal.

My fantasy league nominated me since I'm the commish, I'm donating an amount equal to all buy ins to pancreatic cancer research since one of our members lost their mother this year to this awful disease. I don't see the downside to this vital movement since its generated a ton of pub and donations for ALS and other diseases as well.
