I'm from Texas and I don't consider most of the people that I've met from philly/new jersey/new York educated in any form, but they'll definitely tell you what they think of anything. (I only know about 40 people from those 3 places collectively)

Lotta good schools and affluent/liberal areas in VA and NC.

The main cause is the metro/rural divide but since coastal areas usually were settled earlier and have more natural resources they formed into larger cities more often. Also the deep south ran bad by being so good at lolagriculture and getting shat on after the War.

Everyone thinks the left coast is liberal but go a few dozen miles east the I-5 corridor and youll be in some pretty redneck areas.
