I curious, what did folk here think about the Facebook experiment that's getting a lot of backlash at the moment?

Personally I think, while FB are definitely in the wrong for doing it, it had quite interesting results and I wonder if/how FB will use them. Also maybe I'm a cynic but it seems pretty naive to sign up to a site like FB and not think your information is being used somehow, but I guess it was the fact that FB were actively making people feel bad is where a lot of people feel they crossed a line.

It was a pretty minor experiment. I have no problem with it. Corporations and politicians knowingly manipulate people's emotions to the detriment of those people on a daily basis. When, for instance, fast food companies advertise, they know they are selling a product that is not good for people. Facebook's agenda was to try to make people enjoy visiting Facebook more by not exposing them to posts they don't want to read. While I think people only reading what they want to read is a concern on the net when it comes to say, news sites, Facebook is a site mostly designed for relaxation so it seems fine for them to research what people enjoy reading.

That everyone is getting precious about the fact that some people might have been made slightly more $ad is laughable considering the all-out attempts to generate emotions like fear that everyone is bombarded with on a daily basis.

FB wanted to debunk the theory that people who read about their friends' wonderful lives on FB get depressed about their own life.

I'm not sure the experiment disproves it. Seems pretty obvious that people will generally respond to positive posts positively and to negative posts negatively. I mean I hate cute baby pics but I would never tell an individual, "I hate your cute baby pic."

Data mining is one thing but manipulating what people see on their feed is another. OTOH, advertisements are tailored to individuals on the net all the time.

Yeah I agree the experiment proves nothing other than social conformity.
