I think correcting individual status updates is terrible, but making one myself seems passive-aggressively dumb.

The well intended lot didn't get me frustrated at first, it was more the "freedom fighter" label one person gave him in a good friends status. Wish I could have snapshot'd that exchange before the status was deleted. It got worse. To not say we should celebrate death is one thing, to say stuff like Rashard Mendenhall did on Twitter and "we only have one side of the story" is another.

Why do so many people post things like "put [insert paragraph of text] as your status for X days to show [how you support Y] or [solidarity with group Z]"? I'm not really that annoyed by it but it's like the new chainletter.

You don't think it's a little silly that saying people in the American midwest (for example) who have no affiliation with anyone that died on 9/11 except sharing an American citizenship (and who frequently call places like NY and Washington - not the 'Real America") should be super excited BUT - people from other Western countries shouldn't be? I lived and worked in NYC for over 4 years, do I get to be excited?

Basically, my point is that it's a stupid status update for anyone. And its stupid to try and say who should and should not be excited about him dying.

What about if you're not from the America but know people who died in the London bombings? or Madrid? or Nairobi? or Bali? or Istanbul? or Algiers? or any of the many other places that al-Qaeda / linked groups murdered people in the last 20 years? Is it OK to post "we got em" then or can you only post it if you are American?

I need to know before I post my facebook status - please hurry as whole the world is waiting to hear my reaction to these events.

It was an attack on ****ing america, against the american ideals. Canada can be happy that a terrible person was apprehended, but to react with WE GOT HIM etc is silly from their standpoint.

Everyone in america had a right to be excited about it. Those attacks affected every single person in every part of the country. I live in the midwest, I know lots of people who are serving in Iraq/Afghanistan right now. Why would you say people shouldn't be happy about this because they live in the same country but are a 2 or 3 hour flight away from the attacks?

I also agree with the post about the London bombings, etc. Lots of people around the world can be happy about this, but the excitement of Canadians just seems to be a little bit excessive.

Yes clearly nobody in Canada was affected by the 9/11 bombings. The engineers who travelled south to provide technical knowledge and manpower, the volounteer workers that inhaled poison for months afterwards, the families of the Canadians that died in the towers themselves, and the 155 dead men and women in Afghanistan have no reason to feel anything.

I mean, you're American! And you live in the midwest! You're practically a hero.

lol, at "American ideals". And before you go all crazy again - it's not that American ideals are laughable, it's just laughable to assume you're the only one that has them (and so people that share them might just be happy about someone that attacks them being killed).

Great. You automatically excluded yourself from my earlier comment. And don't you think it also affected people that don't happen to share your citizenship? I guarantee you that my life was made more miserable from the 9/11 attacks than the average mid-westerner who isn't connected to the military.

You don't read so well. I never said that.

Think the Sarah Palin types. It's not rare to hear from them that New York doesn't share the true American ideals.

Edit: I'm done with this argument anyway. This is for stupid facebook statuses, not stupid internet arguments.

What the **** is this.

God this is stupid.

I live in Seattle, 3 hours from Canada. I don't know anybody who died in 9/11. Do I have some intrinsic right to be happy about this that the equally unaffected guy in Vancouver doesn't?

Of course not.

The only thing I hate more than uninformed Midwesterns trying to claim they were affected by the 9/11 bombings are the slightly well-informed middleclass Canadian mouth-breathers who were sort of kind of not really affected by it that lash out at them for it. Ahem.

p.s. LOL CANADA

You are allowed roughly 3 more FB updates about 9/11 a year than Vancouverites.

To some extent this reminds me that on 9/11 my mother and I both started our conversation that morning with "I'm OK", as we'd both manufactured reasons that our respective locations (Seattle, Anchorage) would have been potential targets. lol @ US and our attempts to be relevant.

I say it's totally ok to be excited/stoked, etc. My original post points out how it's annoying when ppl post **** as if they had something to do with the outcome.

Obama's election had updates like this from CANADIAN CITIZENS

Quote:
"You asked, WE ANSWERED! YES WE CAN!"

"We did it everyone!! History is made!"
Imagine for a second you had Americans celebrating a Conservative majority in Canada, see where I'm coming from?

I still think it comes down to specifics. For some Canadians that's dumb. Others may have a situation where it's less so. I just don't think you can easily break it down along those lines.

Obv it's a bit more of a stretch, because "we" becomes, what- "good people" or something, but it's understandable, especially in a big emotional moment where everybody will be looking to find a way to attach themselves.

Kinda OT but seeing how this is the active FB thread, how many people are seeing girls change their FB name to their first name and middle name as opposed to first and last?

Like a girl named Jennifer Smith changes her name to Jennifer Elizabeth.

Been about half a dozen women who are pretty much not connected that have done this the past few months, can't figure out the pattern or why they're doing it.

I can't be the only one to see this, right?

I've seen guys do this too. It's a way of hiding one's Facebook from current or future employers.
