Hello, OOT.

A client of ours just shipped us some Graeter's Ice Cream. I have never had this brand before.

http://www.graeters.com/

It was damn good. Buckeye Blitz was fantastic.

I thought it might be useful for us to have a thread to provide ice cream recommendations. As gelato is so similar to ice cream, I feel that it should also be included in this thread as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelato

Difference between Gelato and Ice Cream:

Quote:
Gelato differs from ice cream in that it has a lower butterfat content, typically gelato contains 4-8% versus 14% for ice cream. Gelato generally has slightly lower sugar content, averaging between 16-22% versus approximately 21% for ice cream. Non-fat milk is added as a solid. The sugar content in gelato is precisely balanced with the water content to act as an anti-freeze, that is, to prevent the gelato from freezing solid. The types of sugar used are sucrose and dextrose and invert sugar to control the apparent sweetness. Typically, gelato and Italian sorbet contain a stabilizing base. Egg yolks are used in yellow custard-based gelato flavors, including zabaione and creme caramel.
For a gelato rec, I usually go to my neighborhood place Pazzo Gelato (in Silverlake) - it's really good, perhaps the best in the Los Angeles area.

Any and all brand / flavor / purveyor recs are welcome!

I'm one of the 40% in the minority who isn't obese, and really have no clue which brand of ice cream is best.

Might have ice cream 3 times a year and whatever type it is, it tastes fine.

In 16 days in Italy last year, me and my girl spent close to 300 euros on gelato.

Someone told me that Fiorello's Italian Ice Cream is the best ice cream on Earth. it doesnt have a website but they sell them in Whole Foods in Nor Cal and other random places. It weighs 40% more than the same size tub of Haagen Daaz. I havent had a chance to try it but someone up there should!

places they sell at as well (all in SF):
Sophie's Crepes in Japan town has the largest selection.
Caffe Trieste
(1667 Market Street).
Yelo (1353 Taraval Street).

Graeter's is amazing. Definitely one of the things I make sure to get when I go home a few times a year. I grew up about 2 miles from one in Columbus and would go there a few times a week when I was really little, so good.

In New York: http://www.laboratoriodelgelato.com/ Basil, fresh mint, olive oil, and blueberry are standouts. A good, brief description of the gelatos: http://chocolateandzucchini.com/arch...ings_sweet.php

Graeter's is excellent. Their plainer flavors are terrific.

Basil gelato sounds like ass but is ****ing fantastic. Dolcezza in the DC area has a lemon opal basil flavor in the summer that is killer. Most of their other stuff is great as well; I like the chocolate amargo.

Breyers chocolate + Smucker's marshmallow topping = awesome. Eat it almost every night (and I'm not overweight or obese, either).

im with indiematt on this one. when i was in italy a couple years ago walking around everywhere it was awesome eating delicious gelato every day

i would usually combine lemon and a different fruit flavor. i preferred the fruit to chocolate or w/e flavors

as for graeters, mint choco chip is my num 1 icecream

combining a good choc icecream and mint in the same bowl is the expert play

I like my ice cream two ways:

gelato from gelato di rosi here in st louis, just a little cup of the coffee flavor, or sometimes peach

or a huge heaping bowl of chocolate, with mandm's, a ton of maraschino cherries/cherry juice, chocolate chips etc, made into a soup. those are literally the only two ways I have eaten ice cream in 10 years

There's this chain Grom in nyc (maybe other places as well?) that IMHO has better Gelato than the standard gelato in Italy.

I got an ice cream maker for my b-day last year. I've been way too lazy to use it much, but I made some really bad ass pumpkin ice cream for thanksgiving.

Whitey's Ice Cream is the best out there. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Mint Chocolate Chip in a waffle cone FTW.

This is true.

BTW, Grom is from Italy. I've been to their location in Florence and it is definitely better than most italian gelato. They make theirs from scratch, while many touristy gelato shops get theirs shipped in.

Insider tip: Look at the color of the gelato. The colors should roughly match their real life counterparts... For example, banana gelato should have a grayish creamy color, not bright yelow. Pistachio should be a pale grey-green, not bright green. Lemon should be close to white, not bright yellow.

When the gelato colors are not natural, that means that there is stuff in the gelato that isn't natural.

Holy Schnikkes...there's a Grom right by my apartment. Stoked. Also my favorite was stracciatella; I'd usually get that and a mint chocolate chip; chuddo is right.
