you're saying that my problems are nouns, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, junctions and adverbs! anything else remaining? apparently my problem is the whole English grammar. I read a lot but I think someone should fix my problems while I'm talking with him/her personally.

"Try thinning the field." and "Try to thin the field." are not the same thing to British people.

The first one means "Thin the field and see if that helps with something." so it refers to the way we try to achieve some other goals, the second one means "Do something that might work to thin the field." so it refers to the thing we are trying to do, perhaps unsuccessfully.

Same difference with:
"Try talking with him." / "Try to talk with him." (the first means speak to him and see if you can e.g. persuade him, the second means to see if you can actually get a conversation started.)
"Try swimming." / "Try to swim."
