I hardly ever listen to the show anymore. It’s just so much less entertaining and enjoyable than it used to be for me. It seems so much more forced and contrived as well. It’s not terrible, but it is compared to what it used to be.

To all the people saying that the show isn’t as good as it used to be, I have to say that it smells a bit like nostalgia to me. It’s like “make America great again” when America has actually been super shhitty to a whole bunch of it’s people since forever.

I’ve listened to the show regularly since the 1980’s when he first came to LA, and back then the show was interesting because of its irreverence and the fact that there was nothing like it on the radio. But objectively, it wasn’t very good. Back then Howard would talk about being the best and the king and how he was going to take over everything for 3 hours, make fun of Gary for 45 minutes, then have something funny like the homeless Hollywood squares for 15 minutes. Once he got on a topic he would go on and on for literally days. I would have to tune out for a few days most weeks to let it pass. During the few years around the filming of his movie and writing of his book the show was basically unbearable because that’s all he would talk about.

I could maybe agree with the argument that Golden years were the first few years on Sirius, but you have to remember that in those years they only played the show once a day. No west coast feed and no replays. So 20 hours a day on 100 and 24 hours a day on 101 the broadcast flat out sucked. It is so much better now to be able to listen to the entire 12 hours of broadcasting piecemeal over the course of the week while driving around. Also keep in mind that the last year of each of his first 2 terms with Sirius all he talked about was whether or not he would come back. Then burn another year of each term talking about how crazy it was that he came back and how nervous everyone was that he wouldn’t. At least now he seems to have given up on that.

The interviews are fantastic now. Not all of them, of course, and I agree with the criticism of the recurrent schticks he always repeats. But Jaime Fox, Robert Plant, Lady Gaga, and John Bernthal have been great. For those of you suffering from nostalgia, just listen to a random show from whatever year you thought was the best. Unless you get lucky, you will pick a lamer show than today’s.

Highly disagree with you here. Around 90% of the interviews are completely unbearable. I am always somewhat shocked when people unironically say that Stern is one of the great interviewers of all time.

"Hey, tell me if you heard this one!"

so the new siriusxm app and the web browser player are evidently free to listen to 200 channels plus howard's channels, including full episodes on demand with commercials cut out, and video clips.

idk how they expect to make money, but as a guy who doesn't own stock in the company i'm happy with the decision.

I've come to the conclusion that Stern's interviews overall are very good, but he is not a good interviewer. He misses out on a lot of subtle things the guest says and forces the interview in another direction too much. He's really just not that smart of a person, so his interview questions just tend to be whatever comes out of his mouth at the time.

His interview on Letterman's Netflix show was very good.

Seemed like Stern tried to be the alpha male and ask the questions a couple of times. Perhaps he's just not used to being on the other side of the interview.

that's howard's typical MO. he's not used to and very much dislikes not being in control.

hes been one of the best interviewers off all time wrt media and mainstream media wtf u talking about. he asks the questions we want to know, not the ****ing PR poolitical bull****, he even cuts guests off when they try to go that route. atleast in the past.

in his prime he was the GOAT interviewer and its not even a debate honestly

i'm not interested in the letterman interview because howard made it pretty clear he was only doing it as a personal favor to dave but anyway i'm seeing reports that howard is saying trump rated angelina jolie a 7 on looks. howard is misremembering it. trump rated angelina jolie a 5 on looks on 10/10/06, and this is the episode if you want to listen, trump calls in at 1h52m https://drive.google.com/open?id=15B...kdnz548eMRyDcn

in that phone call howard even asks him, howard is such a visionary, he asks, "if you were president, what would you do with this north korea situation?" lol howard goat

When did he say that? Didn't look like that to me.

He is extremely insecure and lacks self-esteem. He was the same way on Seinfeld's show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

The Letterman interview was terrific. I wish it was longer and even more in depth.

I watched hundreds of hours of Howard Stern shows on Youtube a few years ago. One of the saddest things about the whole show is how Sour Shoes never capitalized on his talent outside the show. They probably didn't even pay the guy.

Sour Shoes is one of the great talents. He is one of the few people who draws almost universal praise, when it comes to his skills. I thought of Sour Shoes tonight after watching Sacha Baron Cohen in one of his Who is America clips. Sacha Baron Cohen is one of the monster talents of all time. He found his place to express himself. It seems that Sour Shoes got a raw deal, had bad luck.....call it what you want. It sucks to see him not blast off into something bigger.

Maybe the reality of the Stern show is that nobody can outrun the shadow of the show. Not many people establish something big outside of the show. It seems that once you have an identity that starts with the Howard Stern show, that the odds are slim that you can ever achieve anywhere near the recognition outside of the show. Almost all, if not all, people who have formed an identity on the show, will have that be their main claim to fame in their entertainment career (see Artie and Jackie, for starters). I guess it makes sense, as the show was the biggest radio show of all time.

a lady called in today who said she listens to the show with her kids in the car, and that she flips the channel when it gets too sexual. i remember another caller a while back had a similar technique with listening to the show with his kids. would you guys ever listen to the stern show with kids in the car?
