I'd say don't do this just out of the fact it's really stressful on your system. Oh **** and you're in your 40s, NO DON'T DO THIS. MMA and other fight athletes have almost died doing similar things and they are healthier and younger then you. This is a bad idea.
To reiterate, I was younger than 27 is now, fatter, and unhealthier. I did a diet of under 1000 calories a day and lost 34 pounds in a month. He's older, less fat, and presumably healthier (I was really unhealthy). I don't think he can touch 30 pounds.
And you make a good point about health. The thing I did was at the RFO clinic at UCLA where doctors kept a close eye on me weekly, particularly potassium. My understanding is that this kind of thing can be dangerous.
