I was like "What? No way!" because I knew this was not previously true. And it would appear it still isn't, much to my chagrin. Legally unaccompanied minors are not allowed to ride. I looked up the family profile thing and they say "college age kids or older".
There's an "Uber for kids" called Hop Skip Jump that some people I know use.
OP, sending the nephew in an Uber is OK if the people responsible for him think it's OK. Were his parents there? Sending the friend and having his family find out about it later is probably not OK.
