Tom is right. The teacher being in a position of power is where it's hard to justify teacher/student relationships and say they are totally consensual. Also it's a highly crappy thing to do as an adult in such a position of trust. I also don't think it can be argued that a male student/female teacher sexual relationship is somehow not as bad as a female student/male teacher situation. It could be argued that generally females mature faster both physically and emotionally so they would be better equipped to make a decision to enter a sexual relationship with a teacher. Which obviously I don't condone as I don't think it is appropriate for teachers to be having sexual relationships with their students regardless of gender.

Why would it be different with a 17 year old female compared to a 17 year old male? The exact same thing could be said about a female banging a grad student in 3 months time. How is it different?
Also you aren't taking things into consideration such as marking of assessments? You don't think there may be accusations of bias in regards to grading if a teacher is involved with their students. Plus the drama involved in banging your HS teacher is probably going to be detrimental to your studies at a crucial time in your schooling. I can't see how it is a good situation.

I propose an experiment so we can parse out how much influence the position of authority gives the female teacher to manipulate these young men into sex.

We'll take an attractive 26 year old female and get her to interact with and try and form a sexual relationship with 17 year old boys in a non-authoritative role, maybe as a tutor, over a period of months, and see how many of the 17 year olds would agree to have sex with her at the end of the period.

We then run the same experiment, however the woman will be a teacher (still trying to form sexual relationships), and we will see what percentage of 17 year old male students will agree to have sex with her.

By comparing the two rates, we can isolate the effect of the power dynamic on the decisions of the 17 year old males.

Do it. And report back. And tell us what your conclusions are from a poorly designed "experiment."

The data supports the idea that heterosexual adult/adolescent relationships (in general; not specifically teacher/student) are more negative for girls than boys.

Okay, redesign it then so it answers the question. Maybe the control group is female teachers trying to sleep with students, but only after the the final grades are in for the year, and the student knows that they will never be taught by that teacher again.

My guess is however you formulate it, more male students will consent to sex when the female is NOT a current teacher.


Note that this would not prove that teacher/student relationships aren't damaging to the student (which they could be for other reasons like the ones Rexx mentioned above): only that the "power dynamic" and lack of true consent would not be reasons for damage.
