Far too pessimistic to live in a car.

I have a cousin who's decided to live in a van. It seemed really easy for her to do. All she needed was wealthy parents to buy her a van, and now she's all set.

Well considering I had a pocket full of money and a 4runner at my disposal and I drove to some campgrounds out of sheer curiosity Im not really sure if the situations are comparable.

I did say it was plan C or D, but microbet gets it. If my only other apparent option is living under a bridge and/or begging for change, **** it I'll rob a bank and either get away with it or go live in a cushy fed prison.

I spent a few months living in a car over the past three years. I wouldn't recommend it. Complete lack of privacy and never feeling safe, secure, whatever you would call it were the main issues to me.

Empty bank account
Deposit all monies on prepaid debit card
Place debit card in bus station locker
Take key

I'd be interested in more info if you want to share.

Were you in a city?

Anything actually happen or just feel unsafe?

Harassed by the police?

What kind of car?

Did you have a place to shower? (Gym membership?)

Where did you generally poop?

Hot? Cold? Comfortable?

What did you do during the day?

Suburban area near my kids. This was a result of divorce and losing my job. I'm in California. County mental health department was a big help. Eventually I moved to Portland, lived with my sister and her husband, got a job, things started to sort out. I'm back near my kids. Working, rent a room in a house, relationship with kids is much better. Have a solid girlfriend. In a couple months we will be moving into an 1890s vintage house as caretakers, just paying utilities. (I pay a large child support nut) She also has some divorce horror in her past, so it's easy for us to relate to each other's issues. She also gives solid advice from her experiences.

Anything actually happen or just feel unsafe?

Nothing ever happened. I would generally sleep on residential streets where other cars were parked. I would try to park near a fence or hedge row, i.e. not right in front of someone's house.

Edit: forgot, I was staying at a friend's at one point, car got broken into. They only got my winter clothes, it was summer then. Worst part was they got my duffel bag, that had been my dad's sea bag when he was in the Navy during WWII.

Harassed by the police?

Never any contact with police. I purposefully did not follow any kind of pattern in my behavior, to stay under the 'public radar'.

What kind of car?

Subcompact. It sucked.

Did you have a place to shower? (Gym membership?)

No. I would clean up in an all night laundromat bathroom, and used a lot of witch hazel to cut the smell. Occasional shower at ex's house.

Where did you generally poop?

Walmart

Hot? Cold? Comfortable?

Yes. Yes. No.

What did you do during the day?

Walked a lot. Lost a lot of weight. Read paperbacks. Charged stuff (phone, toothbrush, battery packs) at parks. I got good at identifying outlets in public.

Chip,

Sounds bad, but a few changes could have made a big improvement. In LA if you have a bathing suit you can take a shower at the beach.

1890s house? Pasadena?

If you need any help there construction-wise, borrow a tool or something, feel free to hit me up.

I'm closer to Sacramento. This house is in the foothills in gold country. But thanks!

Yeah, ex is from LA. Many times I thought about the showers on the beach.

Did you feel the $30 a month gym membership wasn't worth it?

I didn't plan for the situation. By the time it came up my credit was toast. And my address was 'general delivery'.

Great tips and insight ChipWreckded one additional resource certainly has to be the nearest public Library which in my experience is a great HQ for homeless situations.

As a guy who has a guy currently on my couch, I'd say staying with a friend is the best option. And you have more friends than you think in such a situation. It's real easy to feel completely alone when you're in a bad way, but reaching out (even if it hurts your pride) can change things for the better.

Everything ChipWrecked said about sleeping in a car is on point. And that's the good end of homelessness.

I've been living in my truck for a few years now with the intention of saving money to buy a house but the closer I get to my goal the more I just want to keep living in my truck.

I'd bet that part of the desire to remain in the truck is the unparalleled freedom of movement it provides you, which of course is part and parcel of your work. So your living situation directly benefits your professional life and earnings potential.
