fubar on the plumbing, had to call someone. the fitting I bought does not fit properly. i was suppose to need to heat up the tube with a heatgun, but it slides right in loose. could end up being a nightmare if this feeder pipe is too ****ed up.
Is that your water supply from the street? What is the material(PVC/copper/galvanized?) and can you find a joint where you can screw a fitting on? You just have a rubber coupling clamped on the 2 pieces now?

yeah, the black line at bottom is 1" poly pvc coming from under the driveway to the meter. i own it unfortunately.

I called an expensive plumber so i could talk them into waiving the visit fee easier, which they did. Guy came out and said I had the correct fitting, but that since the galv had been shoved in there for so long, I was going to have problems getting even the correct fitting to seal. Cutting it back further puts it under the walkway and makes the bends a pain in the ass.

so I tried the fitting and it leaked like crazy. I ended up having to put it back as I had it, but I got a much better seal on it. I boxed it in instead of re-burying so I can keep an eye on it.

You might have a ground wire in the box and it's attached to the metal electrical box, if so you can get a 4 prong outlet and wire it to it. Find your 2 breakers and shut them off first obviosly.
I am not touching it and would have an electrician do any changing of the outlet. I was asking in case I had some kind of obsolete outlet the place I bought the dryer from wouldn't have a cable for and I needed to have the outlet changed before delivery.

Houston, we have a problem.

The outlet I have doesn't look like either picture. It has two diagonal slots with another vertical slot underneath what looks like an upside down triangle that is in the middle underneath the two diagonal slots.

Is this going to be a job for an electrician?

I did a drawing of what the outlet looked like, but it will be a couple of days before I can go back to where I bought the dryer to show them.
I found my drawing and I screwed up the description a little. The single, vertical slot is at the top. The rest of the description was accurate.

if anyone is in the market for a high-end chop saw, dewalt has the free stand special going on.

http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-15...3?N=5yc1vZc2d7

i think they run this every other year.

I am but my budget for a new saw is down to $200. Maybe I can increase the budget after I sell some of the light fixtures from the new house

I need something other than my Harbor Freight special for doing the new floors, built-ins and dining room table.

Wow! Overwhelming response from my Craigslist ad for Free Pebblestone. If he doesn't puss out I got one guy coming to pick it all up today. I offered help shoveling it and free beer.

I'd be leery about giving someone free beer. In some jurisdictions, you might be liable if he gets drunk and has an accident after drinking your free beer.

You're right. Free pebble stone; charge him for the beer.

Not sure if a $200 miter saw will be what you are looking for to do those 3 things but it very well could. Floors, any decent saw will be good enough. Built ins, probably good enough; a table saw is more important, but a straight edge with a skill saw would be able to do all your cuts. It's just time consuming. Dinning table, depends on what you want.

Here is a Dewalt miter saw with a bevel.

Maybe rent a saw from Home Depot if you can't find something to buy, craigslist has great deals too.

Woot! The rocks are gone! Guy came by yesterday and I helped him nearly fill up the bed of his full size Chevy. Dude was lowriding out of my neighborhood. Now to till the dirt and get to planting.

I should have said no beer as it wouldn't matter if it was free or not. Knowing he would be driving after drinking would potentially open you up to problems.

One big adjustment for the wife and I is going to be in the area of trash.

Right now if we fill up a bag of trash, we take it to the complex's dumpster. At the house, we are going to be limited to two bags picked up once a week.

Decided to have the carpet replaced in the three bedrooms. Any suggestions for a short nap carpet, suggestions for a good place to buy, and how much should I expect to pay for about four hundred and fifty square feet? Installation included.

I have another question about carpet. The carpet that is there now has deep impressions from heavy furniture and I was wondering what caused it. I'm thinking it has something to do with the pad. Maybe the pad is thick which allowed the furniture to sink down?

Doc,

Depends on who you know. I work in construction management and have a good deal of contacts available and was able to get a high quality carpet made by Mohawk with a LEED certified 8lb pad for about $5/SF installed.

If I were you, I'd start looking at Karastan (a Mohawk brand) if you want a carpet that will last 10-15 years. This carpet has great stain resistance. Also look for a carpet that doesn't have a diminishing warranty (warranty amount doesn't decrease every year).

Don't pay more than $6.50-7 per SF unless you're going for real high end. If you live in the Midwest, south, or arizona, you might be able to pay less.

Edit: don't get a crappy pad, the indentations in existing carpet are most likely from furniture.

I also want to add that I test up the carpet and pitas myself (plus pull staples). This sadness about $0.50-0.75 per SF. Ask them to haul away. They may be able to recycle for you.

That looks like an actual project you got there, how long do you expect it to take ?

I've never done anything like this before so it'll be my hobby over the next couple of years. I'm in no hurry and figure I'll just chip away at it whenever I have time/money. I'll be happy to have it done by the end of next summer, but I might need to get a new furnace before then, in which case I might not be able to afford the subfloor and laminate right away, which will run me a few thousand. I'm going to start a blog about it soon. It will be the failblog version of biggerboat's.
