I'm new to home ownership so what's the deal with leaves? Like am I required to rake them up, or is this just what people do to make things look nice?

Or if I go baller and get a blower, what's the protocol then? Do I blow them away onto the street and then forget about them, or is that frowned upon?

Get a blower/vac. Mine's a Toro, it's been a nice thing. I think this is the model I have.

There's two attachments that make it a blower. Take them off, two other attachments turn it into a vacuum, sucks up the leaves, grinds them up, and puts them in a canvas bag. Empty the bag into trash can/bag (or composting if you have that, I guess). Tough to be simpler.

As to being required, probably depends whether you have an HOA, and whether they have strict rules about appearance.

Do not use a ****ing blower. You are basically a terrorist with noise pollution to the neighborhood if you do. Take the 10 minutes with a push broom and get some minimal exercise.

Almost as bad as motorcycle dipshits ripping their exhaust as loud as possible.

How is using a blower being a terrorist? And wtf at push broom.

Just mulch the leaves with your mower. Might take 2 passes. It’s the easiest way and good for your lawn. I’m a bit of a terrorist so I’ll blow the leaves from my driveway into the grass before mulching them.

Leaf blower users are the worst I agree. It's ridiculous how loud they are

How do you feel about weed eaters, edgers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and all the other stuff normal people use when working in their yards?

You can get a battery powered one, but they’ll probably complain about the extra breeze. Depending on the size of your yard you could go full electric. The ego products are really nice in my experience.

This is the first I’ve ever heard about people complaining about leaf blowers.

Mulching with the mower is %100 the way to go though.

We have eGo products and they work great. Take a bit of time to charge the batteries but if you get a couple of them, it’s fine.

I’m in California and they just banned gas powered yard products starting in a year or two. Fight on terrorism, I guess?

Typically, unless you live in an HOA, you could probably leave them if you don’t feel like moving them, but they can kill your grass if you just leave them.

When you do with them is town dependent. My town I can put them on the curb, loose, and the town comes and sucks them up with a big truck. Some towns you need to bag them and leave them on the curb.

You can **** right off with this take. Someone blowing leaves at a normal time of the day (~9 am to ~ 7 pm) isn’t a big deal and says more about you that it bothers you.

This.
I have to hit them with a mower about three times between last grass cut and first grass cut in order to keep them manageable. By far the easiest and best solution for us.

One of our neighbors blows his leaves to the edge of our property line and then burns them--usually when we are downwind. He has a lot of ****ing trees too.

A leaf blower is infinitely louder than any 'normal' yard appliance. Plus they're often used at 6/7 in the morning before work. And, as mentioned, blowing leaves off of your driveway is virtually the same amount of work as using a broom but with noise.

It's funny cause noise doesn't really bother me but the fact that it's a leaf blower does for some reason. Mostly cause I'm a douche probably.

Lots of cities and towns have bylaws restricting or banning them. I actually have one but I'm on team leave the leaves for the winter. 200% cause I'm lazy.

Depends on how many leaves and where they are but the mower is a good way of getting rid of them. Blower is a good investment when you have a ton of leaves that you have to blow from paths and your driveway. I got both - the blower/vacuum electric combination when I have a ton of leaves to blow and then suck up and just a petrol blower when it is a mix of a small amount of leaves and other debris from mowing.

I agree with this. Just use a lawn mower, then you don't have to spend additional money on a leaf blower or spend a bunch of time raking the leaves.

I have boxelder bugs coming in through my front door for the last few days. Any tricks on getting rid of them? I also have spotted Silver Fish in my garage, but haven't seen any more since I've killed all the ones that were visible. The boxelder bugs seem to be more resilient though.

I had box elder and mottled shield bug problems about 6 years ago. I stopped treating for spiders and haven't had a problem since I believe the spiders were doing a good job keeping them out..

There really aren't any good chemical treatments, and the best way to get rid of them is the vacuum cleaner and try to find where they are getting in.

Correction: Leaf blower users who blow their **** in the street are the worst.

I have MASSIVE leaves every year, but thankfully have adjacent woods to blow them into. Still a massive PITA, but having one of those huge landscaper blowers on wheels helps. ****ing hate it though, was just lamenting the other day that the leaves have begun.

Don't you have where you live a city sweeping truck that comes by and cleans the street and gutters of leaves Home ownership

Oddly enough, I had a few cobwebs by some windows and walls that I've intentionally left alone to keep bugs out and also since Halloween is near. A few days ago a spider bit me and then I got rid of most of the webs and some spiders thinking the strategy might be overrated.

I left a bunch of dead boxelder bug bodies by my front door to be a deterrent to the other living bugs as a Hail Mary.

As if on cue, I was in the backyard today burning some limbs and the remnants of an old stump and heard the unmistakable sound of my neighbor with his backpack leaf blower. Ten minutes later I looked up and thought I was watching the trailer from "Man on Fire." Guy was burning a huge semi-circle (I think--could have been a full circle) of piled up leaves right among 60-80 oaks and a few pines. Initial flames were at least 15' high. Unbelievable. At least he was away from our property line this time.

Our two small fires and his pyromania left a low hanging cloud over the other side of the road for as far as I could see for at least a couple of hours. I was really expecting a visit from the fire department.

How so? Me mum has 5 acres on the NoCal coast with 100 200ft trees and doesn't need that ****. However, trimming and burning the constantly growing Redwoods to prevent fires is basically a necessity.

Not all trees have the same number of leaves.

Conversely, we don't have to constantly trim our trees.

whatever

“Man on Fire” isn’t literally about a man on fire.
