I also bought the part for under $30 and the service appointment to even come and check it out was minimum $85 before they replaced anything. If they would have been able to get there that day I would have gone with them, but the idle time gave me the opportunity to figure it out myself.
So I purchased a new capacitor, hooked it up and it still did not work. The original company came back out to try and "restart" the condenser which according to them did nothing. They are telling me I need a brand new condenser. The Carrier unit I have is 4 yrs old this month. The parts are covered under warranty but of course I'm on the hook for labor. (At least $1k, probably more). Not sure what to do at this point. I'm going on 3 week with no AC and it's starting to heat up. Could the condenser actually be shot?! Or is this company looking for a big labor charge?!?

Compressor or condenser? It's possible the compressor did go bad. I had one yesterday less than a year old that locked up and needed replaced. I still suggest having a second company come out and getting a second opinion. I wouldn't mention anything about another company being out there, and see what they say. If they come to the same conclusion, then you can go from there.

My bad...compressor.

Ok thanks. I am working on getting someone else out here Monday to confirm. My plan is to say nothing as you suggested.

Paint yours bright pink and be sure to overspray gratuitously out of spite.

Speaking of neighbor problems my friend's neighbor has two little yappy dogs that they leave outside in their fenced in backyard for hours barking at anything they see. It is close enough that my friend hears it and wants to say something, but she's too nice.

The neighbors are a couple - guy was in the military and the women is never home. When my friend sees the guy and says hello or how are you doing he just nods his head and turns the other way.

I've been over there enough where it has driven me to tempering sanity. Once when someone was walking along the other side of their house (along a street) I yelled out the open window for them to take the barking dogs with them. I have contemplated hoping the fence and opening the back door for the dogs to go inside, ringing the doorbell late at night to wake them up just to be petty to "get them back" or even spray painting parts of their fence red (after reading the last few posts). What are our options?

Grow a spine and talk to the neighbors?

Me (I don't live there) or my friend who has tried to talk to the guy but whenever she does he walks away?

If you and your friend can't figure out how to talk to another person then I can't help you and you/her are going to spend the rest of your lives getting walked over by everybody.

Update on Wet Neighbor, I talked to the zoning officer and he said that she did call him. He informed her that I have nothing in violation.

Funny thing, I listened to a lawyer who does a 1hr. visit once a month to a local radio talk show. The listener said the neighbor took off his gutters and now it floods my basement. He said "talk to the zoning officer" not exactly like accusations towards me, but still ironic.

Three years after moving in to our house, our oven stopped working. It was 20+ years old, so we bought a new one. When it got delivered, it didn't work either, so I determined that it was just the breaker that had been tripped. I flipped it back on and the new oven worked fine. For a few days.

After cooking on it for a few days, I made a meal where I was using the oven at 400 F, as well as a couple burners on the stove, and halfway through, it tripped the breaker again. I was able to finish the meal, but I had to switch the breaker back on a couple more times while cooking.

Since then, I have made a scrambled egg or two, and some pancakes one morning, and everything has been fine. No big meals though. I'm planning on calling an electrician soon, but I'm just wondering what to say and/or what to expect. Anyone have advice or thoughts?

Sounds overloaded, but could be something else. Make sure you don't just get a bigger breaker if it's too big for the wire. An electrician shouldn't do that, but you never know.

Newer electric ranges often require 40 or even 50 amp circuits. Older ones were usually 30. I'm surprised to you could even plug the new one in. Unless somebody who didn't know or didn't care wired on the wrong pigtail to make it work, which is kinda scary.

Exactly right. But an electrician can tell you. You'd need to check the breaker size, then the wire size, then the receptacle rating, all in amps. If you can get that info, I can tell you the maximum breaker size you can install.

And if that's the case, I repeat (to HBE) don't just change the breaker. You need fatter wires too.

Somewhat ponied, but worth repeating anyway. That mistake could actually burn your house down.
