I've been having this argument with my roommate and all our friends, and so far my girlfriend is the only person that agrees with me out of like 10 people.

Please help us settle the score. What do you call it, a basketball goal or a hoop?

I'm talking about the thing you put in your driveway, or the thing thats on an NBA court. The entire thing, not just the rim.

I say hoop.

The hoop is just the metal circle part of the goal, the way I learned it.

the goal is the entire apparatus (backboard and rim), and the hoop is just the rim......but using either to refer to all of it is like standard.

the "hoop" only accounts for the rim. the "goal" includes the rim, backboard, and whatever keeps it grounded. i always say "goal" though

I've called it both, but probably goal more. Amazingly every online sporting goods store (and Amazon) calls it a "basketball system"

He's now saying that hoop is a northeastern thing. He's also saying that on TV they call it goal and at sports stores. "Shaq just pulled down the whole goal!!!"

It's a basketball hoop. When you make a shot, and you say "I JUST SCORED A GOAL", chances are you're f'n ******ed.

Also, I have a "friend" who calls the court a "field." I need to start surrounding myself with less ******s.

Several things

a) Hoop refers to the metal rim, goal refers to the whole apparatus. I think they are fairly interchangeable though, so this is definitely an exercise in nittery

b) I just pulled something really nasty out of my ear.
