It was definitely Berenstein. Though oddly enough, it showed up both ways in my word suggestion box just now as I was typing.

My entire family remembers it as Berenstein, this blew my mind too.

I always thought it was odd that it was spelled with an A but pronounced as an E.

It really does seem like they avoided using that 3rd 3 to keep away from them possibly being Jewish.

I thought it was pronounced "steen" and spelled "stein". Guess I was wrong. Mind not blown.

Stan was Jewish. Jan was Episcopalian. Together they wrote a seemingly endless series of homespun morality tales featuring anthropomorphized cartoon bears.

The only reason I know its "a" is that I previously noticed how weird it is that they spelled it that way. I grew up reading those books, always pronounced it "steen," and only noticed the "a" years later.

I have a photographic memory. It's not to the degree of the guy who can draw the entire city from memory, but it is photographic to some degree. The Memory Explanation doesn't even phase me, I am positive of what I remember.

100% lock **** you I don't even really believe these pictures aren't photoshopped. i am one thousand percent sure i'd bet my life that it was (in the paralell universe or whatever) actually STEIN. i was an avid reader as a child and read these books plenty of times. i'm not sure if alternate reality or what is the cause of it, but i KNOW its stein. I am sure.

The Pronunciation Explanation doesn't even make sense, because I read the books to myself only, not aloud, simply in my head. I lived a sheltered childhood and never was exposed to television. I always pronounced it berenstein. (STEEN). If I had all those years read the word berenstain in my head, I would never pronounce and remember it as STEEN, it would be STAYN.

This has to be a sick joke. There's no way, absolutely no way, it was not stein.

Spooky, never trust anything but your own senses, people. My senses don't lie and my gut says something is way the **** off about this.

Here's the thing. I read them as a child. And remember thinking it was 'steen' as I was learning to read. Then I saw the TV show and remember the song "ohhhhh we are the bear-ehn-stain Bears' to the tune of Stars and Stripes Forever and that's when I realized I had been reading it wrong. So I am 100% sure there was a glitch in the matrix here.
