Re: CC and getting fraud.

How easy you are getting fraud depends a lot on your bank. My card was fraudulently charged once 120 euros. It was such an incredible pain in the ass not even get the money back, but get the bank to acknowledge that it is a fraud. I had to go to police and it was on me to prove that it was not my negligence that led to fraud. I got only 20 from this 120 back because they said that up to 100 euros fraud it is a client's problem.

At least in Germany, it is a lot harder to be frauded with debit card. The reason is that you can't pay > 25 Euros with debit card without additional identification. With credit card you can pay usually a lot more just by showing the card or giving the card number.

In the US it's a lot different.Credit card fraud is super easy to dispute, the bank automatically freezes the charge while they investigate. For a small amount like you mentioned it probably would have taken a minute on the phone or filling out some online form. What you mentioned happening to you would never have happened in the US.

Debit card fraud can be a total nightmare especially for someone without a lot of money in the bank. You can also spend way more than 25 dollars on a debit card with ease.

It's interesting to see how different this stuff is in other countries.

Yes, for many US credit customers, particularly if they've been with the bank a while, there's literally no investigation. Costs more to have someone look into it than to simply charge it back or write it off.

Always wonder how the network works because it seems so elaborate - had an incident of fraud where I got gas outside of Capitol Reef NP and there was a charge on my card in a b&m store in Jupiter, FL, just a few hours later.

I'm in the UK.

I had around £100 fraudulently charged onto my debit card. As far as I can tell, the card must have dropped out of my wallet and was picked up by someone. The person that grabbed it put through a load of contactless payments before I noticed that it was missing. The bank (HBOS) refunded the payments as a gesture of goodwill within 5-10 minutes. Not sure what the legal situation is but I think that most UK banks would take a similar course of action.

I find the fact that all cards are now contactless really annoying as I would rather put in my pin every time.

that all u got Preki? my mom got $40 when she referred my dad

Spoiler:

Then, today, just this morning, in about ten minutes time after a little reading and some screenshots, I was given 6,000 points for donating $25 to the Nature Conservatory : https://www.mypoints.com?rb=22069129

those can be flipped for $39 on PayPal, or stretched much further with gift cards elsewhere($60). Sometimes, they just give it away, mostly always I mean.

Idk how frugal this is but I try not to eat out during the week when at work. I find It unhealthy and kinda a spew with money. I would much rather go to a nice restaurant on the weekend

Because of hurricane Michael, I lost power for 4 days and my driveway was blocked so I only ate cereal (with powdered milk), PBJ sandies, & trail mix. Saved a bundle...

Sounds like you should turn off your power and keep your car out of gas more often!

maybe with big banks, but when my family moved when i was in highschool, my mom opened a local bank account and my sisters followed suit when they were of age. the bank is terrible; i think all 3 have had fraud problems at least once to the point my mom would have me buy stuff online and write me a check for it. ive had zero problems ever with BofA and finally got my dad to switch.

he banked with wells (and all the ones prior) for years. what tipped him was getting money out for a trip to vegas (3-5k, idk) playing blackjack and exchanging a 100, couple minutes later gets a tap on the shoulder, says come with us. back room, telling him where did he get this bill, its counterfeit. gets confiscated, spends HOURS with wells over $100, finally gets it back and switches to BofA. he bills his clients more than that hourly but said it was the principle that they can actually send a fake bill through all their screening and give it to someone.

Your mom is taking frugality to the next level and is lying to you. Also, there is no such thing as being of age to open a bank account.

please explain how she is "lying" to me by not feeling secure shopping online? she keeps her checking account fairly small but savings in the same bank is much much larger

im pretty sure a minor needs a cosigner but either way, you are a sleuth. ill rephrase; until they had enough money to not just go shopping or to the movies, then they opened a bank account.

thx minimalist

im in need of some help here.. i am frugal , but probably the worst type of frugal , while i do look for happy hours, i waste way too much money , and ive never had a salary , so it makes it tough when times are not good.. some examples of where i think we probably spend too much

3000 rent in manhattan , and while right off the bat , that probably makes sense, me and my gf are both from the city , so this might actually be hard to cut back, but i should look into airbnb options

1400 a month for a beach house in AC,, gotta admit that we love it, and that includes the mtg and up til last year at least,, we are able to write off interest and taxes (my gf is in the 40%+ tax bracket) , we have family and friends that stay over all the time..

stuff we can cut back on..

cable,, its freaking 300 a month combined ,, im ready to cut the cord on spectrum, and just have internet there and get xfinity more souped up and save 80-100 a month there.

eating out .. i really enjoy it,, went to uncle boons yesterday , but we need to start eating in more and not go out as often or eat some fast food from time to time.. we easily spend 100+ a day on avg together for food/drinks/coffee

we have a car, and thats where im frugal,, its paid for in cash , and i park on the street , which is not the easiest thing to do in nyc .

i attribute to my wanton ways because its money easy come ,. easy go with me.. im down over 10k today trading , so spending 150 on dinner seems minute when you have 2-3k swings on avg every day .. i need to get away from that mentality.

ill lay an example of why its so hard for me to be frugal .. yesterday , i had a profit of 8k+ on vicr , so i said to myself,, let's go out to eat babe.. today im down over double that on that same position .. i need a good book on how to budget myself better.

There was probably a skimmer installed at the gas pump:

not sure if you were actually serious or not, but most of my earlier gen family went to MIT and harvard, so they know a few day traders. i believe it was my dads friend that married into much more money, and while he kept working, he said if you cant handle 5 fig swings a day, get out of the line of work. if a days work actually affects your spending ability you are either playing too high or with too little. it looks like a fairly large amount of unnecessary expenses you have, esp if you foot the bill for people to stay for free. and if shes making mid-low 6 figs, you have a decent cushion but not much.

also if you make money off a position one day, and lose it the next, that doesnt really seem like pure day trading as you should prob cash out or eat losses instead of a hold for more overall. putting a million into an account longterm does decently on its own and can still play day to day for smaller stakes.
