I'm not sure why you'd think there wouldnt be a reason to fly over/vicinity of the N. Pole? True no flight path actually goes over the N. Pole, but the general idea of flying direct from two places like Chicago to Shanghai would involve going over Canada towards Russia then through to China. You've been told this is the path is cause it's shorter on a sphere, the actual reason is it's the direct way.
