The Three Colours trilogy (mentioned earlier) is it. Good luck not falling a little in love with Juliette Binoche when you watch Blue.

Godfather is not on this list because of GF3?? How do you justify Matrix 2&3 then?? If i'll pick with your choices

1) Batman
2) LoTR
3) Indiana Jones
4) Toy Story
5) BTTF

Clearly you have been hit in the head recently and suffered brain damage for thinking some cartoony cgi fest is in your top 5. Put some head on ice and come back later.

I like the idea but definitely feel we're missing some good and bad trilogies.

Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Matrix ...

What you choose probably depends more on genre. Of OP's choices, I'd pick Bourne or Indiana Jones as my favorite but it's hard not to see Star Wars as the biggest. Did the word trilogy even exist before Star Wars?

We talked about the LOTR trilogy when I was a kid in the early 80s...

My favorite books ever. Too bad the movies were terrible.

I don't get this. Did you read the books? I thought the LOTR trilogy was great, and very true to the books with a few exceptions. Two towers was my favorite of the three movies. One of the few instances where the movie interpretation did justice to the books.

The Hobbit trilogy was disaster though. I didn't even watch the last one after they butchered the first two

The problem with LOTR is the same as a lot of movies from it's era. CGI was getting good and they just over used it in so many films. The first movie was really good but after that it was like watching half a cartoon and half a live action movie. You can look at the Star Wars prequels, Matrix trilogy and plenty of other movies where they relied way too much on CGI and those movies suffered from it.

How did Matrix 1 suffer from CGI?

Matrix 2 didn't suffer from CGI either, the story was just overwrought. And 3 just sucked. The problems weren't due to CGI though.

Same with SW prequels, they just sucked, but it wasn't due to the CGI.

There was plenty of cartoonishness in both. Matrix I'd say Neo vs infinite Agent Smith fight as one example and Star Wars the big battle scenes were cartoonish.

OK, so some scenes that looked cartoonish, but weren't the main problems of the movies?

LOTR are my favorite books ever, I read them at least 5 times by the age of 21.

I hated the first movie when I saw it in the theater. Didn't think it was true to the spirit of the book at all. So many ridiculous and fake looking battle scenes.
I saw the second movie on someone's big screen TV. Liked the portrayal of Saruman but still didn't care for it much. Never bothered to watch the third movie.

Big fan of the books from the time of the hype around Bakshi's LOTR abortion version in the 70s.

I think very highly of the movies. There were things I would have liked to have seen, Bombadil, the Barrow Downs scene, but overall, movies are well done. Except, elves at Helms Deep?!? **** that!

The only movie adaptation I ever walked out of thoroughly pissed off was The Shining.

Over time I've even come to appreciate that for the masterpiece it is.

I felt the same way about the shining the first time I saw it. Nicholson's performance is outstanding though obviously. I thought the miniseries was very well done.
