I thoroughly enjoyed Chappelle's last 2, so I can't wait for these!! Todd Barry has a new one coming out on the 26th. He's always solid as hell!! And next month.... new Tom Segura!! He has of my favorite specials on Netflix already. I'm expecting a 3rd here!!

Not a lot of great specials this year (at least that I saw) but some damn good ones. Patton's was probably my favorite.

Rory Scovel Tries Comedy for the First Time was my #1 this year.

That was my #2. I was shocked at how much I loved that special since he's hit or miss in some of the sitcoms I saw him on.

I don't know if he's improved, but the last Aries Spears stand up I heard years ago was just completely unoriginal and everything I hate w/ stereotyping. He basically just had a series of 'Black people act this way, white people act that way' full of cliches for an hour. There was little room for nuance and I felt like his comedy would have fit in much better in the early 90s before like 5 superior comics basically used the same material, only to transcend it later.

I was a big fan on one of Chappelle's two new netflix specials, and thought the other was as good as most new comedy I heard this year. He's in an awkward spot since he's way too rich and successful to be a man of the people, which was one of his biggest advantages during his best comedy.

Just saw Russell Howard's latest special "Recalibrate".

By saw I mean, "Sat through half of it on Netflix before turning it off". He's like John Oliver in that his stand-up is pretty bad but his show is pretty good. Oddly enough, Howard ended the first season of the show by having John Oliver as his guest. Two middling at best panelists on Mock the Week who were continually outshone by the hilarity of Frankie Boyle.

Just saw Chris Rock is coming to Glasgow late January. Then I saw that his show was on a Wednesday

Also seems that mobile phones and smart watches are banned from his shows. Gotta tie them in special bags and all that. Wonder if it's security demanding this or if Chris Rock is afraid of people pirating his show.

it's the latter, standard across his entire tour globally (hence the name of the tour) to ostensibly protect the $25m netflix investment. but it's great knowing no dickhead near you will be screwing around on his phone, and the bags are awesome tech.

go see the show, i loved it.

One of my favorite things to do while finding stuff on Netflix is to watch trailers for comedians because the vast majority are so insanely terrible. Anyway, I was doing that on mushrooms while waiting for female to sit down and found this Mexican dude Felipe Esparza. Netflix seems to love minorities who ham up their race as their entire angle so I wanted to see how bad his was. He comes out with a thick accent which cements it for me that he'll be another Netflix hack. Anyway, dude was hysterical. It's still on there so check it if you can. Anybody seen him?

Also checked out more John Mulaney and he's hilarious as well.

I think My favorite special this year is a toss up between Sarah Silverman and Judah Friedlander.

Those are two very good picks. This was unquestionably the best year ever in stand up comedy specials. The sheer amount of good work here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_in_stand-up_comedy

is quite staggering.

I'd also rate Hasan Minaj's special very high on the list.

Not sure if it should count (since it was an audio release) but Frankie Boyle's 2017 release Prometheus Vol. 1 was fantastic. I had the privilege of seeing it live at The Fringe and I laughed so much and so hard that I left the show with a sore throat. It was the best show I saw this year. To be fair, I am biased as I entered the show a fan of Frankie's and he did not disappoint.

Daniel Sloss and Glenn Wool were also terrific at The Fringe. If you can find any of their material, I suggest giving it a viewing.

Jack Whitehall's special "At Large" is definitely an acquired taste, especially if you aren't British or at least familiar with British culture. You also have to be able to handle the fact that most of his humor comes from the perspective of a pampered, privately-educated toff which is either completely unbearable or highly entertaining depending on your perspective.

first one was like the rest of his other recent specials. dave telling entertaining stories that invariably end with a pretty funny ‘twist’ punchline and him smacking the microphone into his knee. enjoyable and I like dave just fine, but I’ve always found the notion that he’s in louis and chris rock’s stratosphere to be absurd.

Yeti,

For standup..

Louis>chapelle>chris rock

Chris Rock is too one dimensional and his shtick is tiresome. I wouldn’t put him near the top of any list.

I haven’t watch his latest yet but Chapelle just seems to not give a **** anymore.

Louis is my favorite comic but I think his TV shows are overrated. His recent troubles should get him focused on standup which is fine by me.

They are all top top tier right now. There are very few if any other people I'd prefer to watch. But I think if I was hanging out with any of them, Chapelle would be the funniest, naturally. Louie is def in some dark gestating period right now and it'll be fascinating to see how/if he changes after a year or two of brooding.

I think what's important with Dave now is that he's not just reciting comedy. He's gone well past that, sort of in his own way (although actually there's some Bill Cosby and Carlin to it). I've only seem the first of the two, the one that ends with the long pimp story at the end. I thought that story was mesmerizing and pretty deep if you let yourself drift off a bit and think about it. That's just me, but I'm at a point now where I kind of enjoy hearing him preach a bit too.

Now that said, the mic slapping bores me to death.

The sound was terrible in The Bird Revelation. Kept having to adjust the volume throughout. And the material itself was just decent.
