Boston Comedy Festival is coming up, I have a few friends that will be in it. Well worth the money to check out some up and comers.

Yes - GC #1
after u have Hicks, Chappelle, & Pryor in no order

not up much on current comedians, so many of them - have heard that name Patton Oswalt a lot - what is his kind of humor? And the few I have seen some from below

I have seen a bit of Louie CK & Lewis Black I think his name is....thought both were OK.....& saw some of an Austrailian comic named Jim Jeffries I think.....he was OK too......another I saw some of was Jim Norton....even though I thought some of his humor was smart.....just don't like folks that do so much material on sexual over the top stuff....maybe getting old

oh yeah, read something lately about Denis Leary stealing Bill Hicks act for his.....sometimes almost word for word.....& read Robin Williams was also a very notorious joke thief.....although Williams called it joke sampling

Yeah, right before Hicks died he said he got cancer on purpose just to see if Leary would do it too.

the overall experience of watching an aziz show would be a lot better if he would just cut out some really awful bits, e.g. when he gives too many examples for a joke, or gets too surreal, or lets jokes drag on too long.

i understand some of this is personal taste, but it seems like every one of his specials has some really cringeworthy unfunny bits, and the crowd reaction typically seems to mimic mine. i'm constantly amazed that he doesn't strip these bits out. take for example that liquid nitrogen part. i mean that was pretty awful for like 30 seconds and the audience was pretty much silent.

this special did have waaaaaay less of those than than in the past, maybe only 2 or 3. pretty decent all around, even if for me it's more something i smile through the whole time as opposed to laughing a lot. though i did think the five star restaurant bit was pretty awesome and extremely well done tho.

I saw aziz a month and a half ago. 90% of his show was about interacting with the opposite sex/online dating etc. It was good, but a diversity of material would've been better.

The main issues with Aziz's standup are something that he would need a ton of experience in standup comedy writing editing, or someone to work with him to achieve that. It's a 79minute special that was really good, but could've been chopped down to a great 60 minutes. He doesn't need to cut any bits, just trim the fat around them all. He's had 3 specials since 2010, and they all suffered from that. The material is getting a lot better, he just needs to learn that particular skill, which is not easy.

Have any of you seen Kevin Nealon's special called "Whelmed, But Not Overly"? It's on Netflix and I think it's sort of funny but he has a really annoying habit of repeating a lot of the things he says.

Dean Martin roasts: The more Don Rickles the better. He hosted the Dean Martin roast of Dean Martin.

Very well put. I think he's a very smart guy and talented but he needs a mentor or someone to tell him he still needs to cut down and stop trying to be funny, which is how the excess of examples problem comes off to me

Thought this was great.

Spoiler:
He asked for someone from the audience to heckle him.

Here is a comic from the Boston Comedy Festival doing material that some people deemed controversial. Most of the comedians in the audience agreed that he was hilarious and pulled it off, but the crowd afterward was not too happy.

You want a comedian to stop trying to be funny?

There's a big difference between being funny and trying to be funny

Like DC said in his post, aziz sometimes pushes his jokes too much which wears them down. Saying a joke can be funny but piling on to it 3 or 4 times (he does a few times in the new special) makes it seem like he isn't confident enough in the joke, which is what trying is like as opposed to just being funny

I watched about 10 minutes of Nick Cannon's special on Showtime last night. He's terrible. I knew that already, but now I really know that.

I saw it somewhere and based on the title, I considered watching it. But it occurred to me that it's probably not a bunch of people saying "F Nick Cannon" in different, funny ways.
