Watching the Rogan special right now. Pretty terrible so far as he is high as **** (his words). Did have one real solid joke so far though in the first 15 mins.
Its not as bad as I thought it would be. Once you get past the 10-15 minute mark, it very watchable. His delivery is sort of off-putting though.
Saw Tig and Aparna Nancherla tonight, both were phenomenal. Tig is such an incredible performer it's unreal. After an hour or so she closed with an absurd and somewhat surreal 30-45ish minute bit that would sound dumb if I described what happened and won't translate to an album, but destroyed.
Saw Dylan Moran tonight doing his off the hook show, found him brutally unfunny.
His material is very Eurocentric and simply doesn't translate well to American audiences. Most of the pirated performances I've seen of his on YT that were in America has very unresponsive audiences.
IMO, his material is absolutely killer and I haven't run into anybody from UK/Ireland who thinks he's bad.
Was chillin' and saw something from Rich Hall. Never heard of the guy prior to this but thought he was pretty good. Music was a bit hit-or-miss though.
i saw patton's show last week where he did about 20 minutes about his wife. it was absolutely amazing. it was really clear he's still dealing with it (in his life and comedy wise) but that kind of unpolished and raw performance is my favorite to see. he also was able to do it while not isolating the audience and kept us with him. it was really something to see.
also got to see tig over the weekend and echo faluzure, she's so smart. she also ended with a really amazing and obscure bit that would be weird to write out (curious if it was the same as other shows, it felt pretty specific to NYC but who knows). really curious if it translates into a special or not.
I saw Brian Regan in a theater a couple weeks ago, it was fantastic.
When he came back out for an encore the crowd was screaming requests before he even got a chance to formally ask. The man has built a very impressive following.
I also just found out Birbiglia is coming to my tiny home club, which is pretty exciting.
I find it so much harder to enjoy stand up on television versus live.
I guess the ultimate test will be to go to a live show and then see it on TV at some point afterwards, but that hasn't been an option for me yet.
I would say that if I watch ten comics in this thread, I laugh out loud multiple times on maybe two of them. But live, the hit rate is well over half and I just go to shows that have a good reputation, but have comics I've mostly never heard of.
there is no doubt comedy is much more effective live.
it's much more rare for me to enjoy a stand up special on TV whereas I might find the same set hilarious had I seen it live.
yeah, i dont think you can really say that a recording is anywhere as good as live, but TV has the advantage of being more accessible, cheaper, and makes people around the world more available.
