Jeselnik over Burr huh? Interesting. Jeselnik and Schumer tell what comics refer to as fake jokes, where as Burr tells more real jokes. More of the CK style.

I like jeselniks jokes but realize his style isn't ideal in a comedian sense.

Any recommendations for comedians similar to mike birbiglia? The same kind of long form storytelling?

I'm gonna dig deep and suggest Stewart Huff.

Unfortunately, guys that do long form stuff have a hard time breaking through because a 14 minute story about a kid stealing a penguin is never going to fit in a 5 minute late night talk show slot. 'This American Life' is probably their best shot, but a lot of them just fly under the radar forever like Stewart.

Never heard of him, but Ron White tells long stories (tater salad).

yeah it's a really interesting form that's really hard to find. This American Life is a great format for them, and how I found out about Birbiglia to begin with. I'll definitely check out this guy and Ron White.

Really interested if anyone finds others in this kind of form.

Christopher Titus's actual standup material is very story form. Especially his latest 2 or 3. I'm a huge fan, but a lot of that might be because of the show. He's very good, but you can easy spot major weaknesses in his actual standup game. Worth giving a shot regardless though.

Best stand up act I ever saw was Greg Giraldo. By far the only comedian who made me laugh the entire show.

Seinfeld was the reason I started doing stand up, and the 2 times i saw him, the guy who opened for him was funnier than Jerry.

Jim Breuer really underrated standup doesn't get enough love, but he is a definite have to see guy when he comes in your area.
+1 to Giraldo. Him and Robert Schimmel were lol funny and both died way too early.

His first 2 specials were pretty great, but now his act has gotten stale.

long form storytelling :

- i've seen jim jefferies 'fully functional' live and it had maybe a 15 minute story at the end regarding sex that was one of the funniest things i've seen live (i have no idea how it holds up on the DVD). more to the point i believe all his shows (haven't seen them yet) end on a similarly long raunchy tale.

- if you're looking for a whole show based around one overarching story then maybe check out dave gorman's 'googlewhack adventure'.

Another good long storytelling bit- The Machine by Bert Kreischer. You may recognize him from Bert the Conquerer. Also, Van Wilder is based on him.

I love Norm MacDonald, but I'm not big on Twitter, and didn't realize what a genius he is on there until recently. Unfortunately, he deletes some of his best work. But for others like me who haven't been following previously, here is an example:

Another similar style worth checking out is Kumail Nanjiani. I slept on this guy for awhile, but decided to pick up his hour long special from the CCDirect site. Great special. This guy is a lot of fun.

Props to this thread hooking me onto Bill Burr. Absolutely love his material. Hoping to find some lesser knowns that have a similar style.

Seriously though, this guy's a genius. Probably my cousin or something:

CK's been mentioned.

Andy Kaufman was nuts. People couldn't tell if his feud with Jerry Lawler was a hoax when it was in progress.

Been watching Marc Maron's stand up, and he's pretty great. I'd only listened to his WTF podcast before, his latest special on Netflix is pretty good.

The fine line between insanity and genius. He was a master troll before we developed the Internet and all got lots of practice.

Donīt forget Eddie Murphy one of the funniest stand-up comedians ever.
Raw & Delirious are hilarious.

And btw,
Kevin Hart is terrible
