That's basically all I've ever seen him do. I've seen him perform maybe one actual half set mixed with crowd work in the past five years. Every time his crowd work seems unique and he kills it.

If you haven't heard it I recommend listening to Brian Koppelman's interview of Big Jay on his podcast. He hit some very real and emotional moments that gave a good insight on the life of a stand up.

I think she's pretty great, her Live album is phenomenal (although it might also make you weepy).

There's a doc out there right now called "Knock Knock, it's Tig Notaro." She and Jon Dore road trip across the country performing in all kinds of unusual venues like people's living rooms and farmhouses. Really entertaining. It reminded me of the Comedians of Comedy.

Tig Notaro Live is probably the best comedy recording produced this century.
She is in awkward situation now where literally nothing she does can top that performance, but her new material is still incredibly good.

I like tig and think her special "tig notaro live" was good, but have to disagree pretty strongly with that statement.

I think alot of that sentiment is cuz of how brave ppl think it is and how she was talking about cancer etc.

and while I commend her for it and think it's a helluva thing to be able to make what she went thru funny, to say it's the best comedy special in the last century is pretty damn bold.

you realize you're saying it's the greatest special of all time right?

I'm of the opinion that while discussing serious issues is fantastic, it doesn't automatically make a special funnier or "better".

while it may be more significant/unique/memorable/noteworthy than say a jim jefferies or bill burr special, it doesn't just make it a better special just cuz jim n bill are talking about stuff of zero social or political significance.

I guess it just depends what we are judging it by.

if we're going by what actually makes you lol the most tig's special wouldn't make the top 10 imo.

and that is coming from someone who think tig rocks.

her cameos on inside amy schumer are freaking hilarious btw and hopefully she gets more comedic roles cuz I think she could have a real great acting career in addition to stand up.

Time is an illusion lunchtime doubly so.

OK heh that def is more reasonable tho I still disagree
I would put her firmly behind

bill burr
louis ck
jim jefferies
dave chappelle

in that order, but glad to know u were only saying she was the best in the last 15 years not the last 100.

RBK,

Gotta include Patrice.

Talking about MSG? I'm hoping there's going to be some sort of video screen to show his face better, but his type of comedy is the only kind I'd consider seeing in an arena. That said, I'm going and was ready to pay anything to get as close as possible. For what it's worth, I saw him from the back of a 3500 seat theater where I couldn't see any facial expressions, and I still laughed my ass off.

oh ya Patrice is up there with Bill for me he was amazing.
had he not died he may very well have been the GOAT.

pretty ****ing rigged that patrice and giraldo are dead, greg was also incredible.

most ppl only know him from the roasts, but his regular stand was up hilarious (I saw him live a few times and I was literally crying from laughter) and he was insanely smart as well.

I'm not particularly interested in debating something that is obviously subjective but you are listing people, not albums/specials. It is a pretty significant distinction.

I could say a lot of things about Live, but I'll just leave these two quotes from people who were lucky enough to see it live.

"Just saw Tig Notaro at Largo...made me feel like I was an open miker. Absolute genius!"
-Bill Burr

“In 27 years doing this, I’ve seen a handful of truly great, masterful standup sets. One was Tig Notaro last night at Largo.”
-Louis C.K.

ya like I said in my personal opinion I feel it gets extra love due to the nature of the special and how unbelievably personal and moving it was.
obv it's a very subjective medium, and to me her special gets a little of the boyhood treatment (mediocre film that got hyped up because what went into making it).

as for listing ppl vs specials I did it cuz I would pretty much rank all of burr, jefferies n louis' major specials (well maybe not louis last 2).

anyways this debate is totally pointless to each their own and I def applaud tig, that set took some serious guts, not to mention talent, to pull off.

Nick DiPalo is great and been in the stand up world a long time but never seems to get the recognition he deserves. He's been on Ari Shaffir's Skeptic Tank podcast twice and both are great listens.

Big Jay Oakerson came up in the Philadelphia comedy scene with Kevin Hart. Just relistened to Kevin Hart's episode on WTF and he talks about how Jay was one of the few white comics who could hang in the black rooms. Big Jay Oakerson's WTF episode is definitely worth listening to. He has some crazy stories about working as a driver for an escort company and the insaneness that ensued.

Speaking of great comics who passed away too early, Robert Schimmel was hilarious. Hearing his bit about AOL, while extremely outdated, still holds up today. He's the type of comic where listening to his bits will have you crying tears from laughing so hard.

RBK, I agree w you completely on Tig, but leave Boyhood out of this. Boyhood was brilliant and worth all of its merits.

I like Tig and think she has some great material, but I probably have heard 5 specials from women alone that I'd rank above Tig Notaro 'Live'. As for male comics I can think of another couple dozen specials I'd have above it. I can't think of many that have the heart or gravitas that Tig Notaro Live had, but I'd rather listen to many more for purely comedic reasons.

I've heard that DiPaolo along with Louis CK and the late Richard Jeni were writers for Chris Rock on his original HBO special. I can really picture Nick writing that bit about hiding your money in books bc it is like kryptonite for n#@&s. Who knows, but kudos to Rock for choosing those 3 guys to help him. The best of the best. It obviously paid off. That Rock special was the most important (and funniest) special since Eddie Murphy's stuff from the 80s.

I enjoyed reading that Yeti. Josh Fadem is mentioned in that article and while I forgot that he was Liz Lemons manager, I had just seen him do a great set on the second season of Coming to the Stage. Would recommend watching, he starts with some strong physical humor and crowd work.

Watched a bunch of Comedians in Cars getting coffee on a cross-country flight recently. I am a huge Seinfeld fan but had not seen this before. I think the show is awesome. Particularly liked the Todd Barry episode. Jay Leno ep was great also. Surprisingly 2 of my favorites were Tina Fey and Sarah Jessica Parker, neither of whom I had been a big fan of before.
