Anyone going to bother with Chris Tucker's Netflix special? I think it goes live this week. I need to wait for some reviews before I consider it!!
I gave up 20 minutes in, but it was not good. His stool-****ing game is on point, though.n

Cool. Thanks for suffering. Actors that eventually do standup almost never work for me. Even great comedic actors.

Chris Tucker was a stand up before he was an actor. I think his brother owns one of the bigger clubs in Atlanta.

Did not know that. He was great in Friday, but any more and I don't think I could take it.

Just got my tickets for the oddballfest in Camden. I can't wait!

Never thought I'd say the word Camden followed by Can't wait

Oddball obviously has a great lineup, but it is too bad they'll be in a bunch of outdoor amphitheaters. I understand that it is the only way to make the economics of the whole thing work but its a damn shame.

ya I was pretty disappointed with the oddball festival last year.
amazing lineup but comedy just isn't meant to be experienced in that venue.
but obv for a lot of these locations it's the only chance ppl will have to see so many great comedians, I'm just spoiled here in CA.

Yea, I'm really jealous of people near LA, so many great shows.

No Por/Sea this year =/

Anyone seen Dov Davidoff live? Love what I've seen of his stuff and he's doing 6 shows in 3 nights july 23-25 in San Diego at the American Comedy Company. Think website said it's going to be new material for an upcoming special he's putting together. Tickets are only $18.

Have never been to a comedy club actually. This place has a two drink/appetizer/etc minimum. Still think can get a great show for under $40 hopefully once everything is factored in.

With the right crowd, Dov is hilarious when he interacts with them a bit and more naturally, which works in smaller venues better, obviously. Good that its new material, cause he kinda disappeared after "Filthy Operation".

If you've never been to a comedy club, you are missing out. Stand up comedy thrives in small venues.

When it comes to stand up:
Clubs > Theaters >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Arenas/Amphitheaters

I listen to a bunch of comedy podcasts and understand this sentiment held by you (and held by lot of stand ups). Obviously some guys like Kevin Heart, Louis, Rock, etc work better in a bigger venue, but I love comedy specials filmed in clubs/bars. Marc Maron's Thinky Pain is a good example, and Ari Shaffir's Passive Aggressive and Paid Regular as well. Honestly, I think Shaffir is underrarted. Only knew him through his podcast Skeptic Tank before watching his specials. You can tell watching his specials that he's definitely put in his time and honed his material over the years.

These comics aren't better in a bigger venue, they just make so much more money in a big venue that they'll accept the trade off.

I'm not very familiar with Shaffirs body of work, but his rant about the one armed woman was both unnecessary and, more importantly, unfunny. He seems like a terrible person, and I can't believe Comedy Central ran the bit without at least bleeping the name.

Have heard many a comic talk of how Rock will try out new material at smaller clubs but that it's when he does his big shows/specials is when he puts that extra oomph in his bits. That's sort of what I was trying to get at. They say he sees if the joke can stand on it's own and helps him test things out in a low pressure situation.

As to Shaffir's remarks about the one armed comic, I haven't seen or heard the bit. I agree that he does come across, at times, as an unsympathetic ahole but his specials really surprised me.

Shaffir is ****ing hilarious and also, probably, a bad person

yeah when chris rock is workshopping new jokes he doesn't do the theatrics, but that's not the same thing as 'when going at 100% is he more enjoyable in a club or bigger venue?' (with that said there'll be some of the stalking of the stage that he simply cant do in a club)

i could easily believe that he is one of the only acts that's better in a theatre (not arena). i'd rather hear 2000 black people laughing uproariously at his stuff than 50.

Let's just say I meant to say that some comics are better suited for a bigger venue, and not necessarily that they perform better in a bigger venue as compared to a smaller venue.

Aside from Rock, the comedians who perform well in (cater to) massive venues I'm usually not a fan of. I do love Kevin Hart's standup most of the time, and that he played around with the fact that he was in a massive venue. But I'm not really into the personality having to be that big on stage. And on the other side, a personality that big feels odd on a massive stage. Like Aziz's "Buried Alive" special was excellent. His last one, material aside, just looked and felt odd.

Aziz's latest special was terrible. Large stadiums dictate a more punchline heavy set and audience work just doesn't work as well.

Louis is almost certainly as good or better in a small venue as opposed to a big venue. I've never seen Hart, but could see him and Rock being better in auditoriums because of their styles, which don't fit as much in my preferred smaller venues.

Once a comic becomes an A-list comedian, it just doesn't make sense to not do bigger venues. Sure, maybe they need to hone their craft a bit in the smaller venues, but why make maybe a $1000 or less when they can sell out a venue holding 5000+ nightly?

Yeah Aziz's last special was my least favorite, but on second viewing it wasn't that bad. Aziz definitely caters more towards a bigger venue, but he has a solid small venue game as well. Maybe the best at being great at both sizes is Chappelle.

Saw my wife watching the Chris Tucker special. Caught around 5 minutes of it. Awful and walked away. She didn't like it either, was just on as background noise after a few mins for her.
