curious how effective his policy to cancel tickets from scalpers is.. can't find many instances of people complaining on the internet, seems like it should be safe.
depends on the venue, but i think there's a <1% chance you get completely screwed
See Seinfeld is playing some dates including one in April at the Borgata in AC. Still one of the best, might have to get tix although pricey. I went to see Dave Attell at the Comedy Cellar years ago and Jerry made an unannounced appearance, and he was fantastic as usual.
i just saw louis at msg a few days ago, very similar experience. he absolutely killed it. and i was also seated by annoying drunk girl who kept violently convulsing in her seat/hitting her boyfriend/laughing extra loud to make sure everyone in the section knew she thought it was funny.
his opener there was Greer Barnes who i had never heard, but was great. have since googled him and turns out he's been doing the exact same jokes for many many years, which is a little disappointing.. they were good though.
oh man did she have binoculars? (we weren't even far away and she still insisted on using them) would be amazing if she just followed him on tour being terrible, cuz what you're describing was exactly what this chick next to me was doing.
I went to the Cellar a few years ago. It was a night where nobody super famous showed up. One comic was kinda boring--he was the opener. The next two were pretty good. The last guy was Todd Barry. I didn't know who he was. I had seen him on Flight Of The Conchords, but it slipped my mind. Anyway, he was really good. Really good. His style was very low energy, and he was not pleasant to look at, so I formed an internal prejudice against him. I didn't want to like him, but his writing was so funny I couldn't help myself.
I'd def go back. Even without Todd Barry it would have been a good night.
I had it recommended and I don't regret going at all. It was a ton of fun (even the skeptics in my group of friends thoroughly enjoyed themselves) and Jeff Ross and Gilbert Gottfried actually showed up. Also, in a way it led to me starting doing stand-up myself.
I pretty much always take my friends there whenever someone visits me. It is my favorite comedy venue. It is super intimate and the comedy seems more personal. A lot of the comedians will do unpolished material because it is almost a practice venue to some of them. They start new material there to get a feel for it. It always has decent comedians and a couple of headliners will come as well. I've seen Dave Attell there countless times. I had a night where Dave Attell, Neal Brennan, Anthony Jeselnik, and some other bigger name I can't remember all showed up. Oftentimes big names will show up unannounced to perform sketches. Last time I was there Jeff Ross just showed up in the middle of Attell's bit and they started ripping each other then took turns roasting audience members. I just can't imagine many other venues where that could happen. I've been there when Judd Apatow decided to show up and try out stand up for the first time in years (he sucked, but it was still interesting to see the craft of someone trying to go back into stand-up). I've heard of huge names like Louis CK, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock just stopping by. Needless to say, I can't recommend it enough.
for going to an intimate venue and having enormous names show up announced? impossible (edit, i should probably qualify i don't have a clue what i'm talking about. but it seems unlikely from what i have read. i don't think the same amount of names drop in at caroline's etc?)
there are a ton of smaller more intimate venues at festivals though which can be pretty incredible if you choose the right show.
about to pass out so won't be around to help with any follow up questions but this has been bugging me for a while and i know its not going to be easy but if anyone can help me figure this out i'll be very grateful.
so i recently heard a comedian do a bit about how much of a racket it is that senators/congressman etc can basically get paid for 2 years to campaign for president/higher office and then if they don't win they can just go back to their old job.
he then went on to compare it to someone working at subway not showing up to work, collecting a paycheck while trying to get a job at quizno's.
so then i was randomly watching a dov davidoff special "filthy operation" which was filmed in 2010 and he has the EXACT same bit, down to also using subway and quizno's.
i'm about 90% sure dov did the bit first (and he's not very famous at all so would be very easy for a bigger name to steal his bit) but i can't for the life of me remember where or who i heard do the bit.
if anyone has heard anyone do this bit please post, its driving me crazy.
- race of the comedian? And gender for that matter
- general age? Older, younger
- what kind of setting they performed? Club vs special or what kind of venue? Maybe it was a Comedy Central special or an hbo special or their own independent release?
Hannibal Buress has a bit where he talks about Quiznos. I'm pretty sure he pronounced it, "Queeze-nose". I dunno if it is the same joke. All I remember is the "Queeze-nose" part.
100% I've heard it from Hannibal Burress. I dunno who did the bit first, but if its that serious I'd imagine someone would have called him out before. I think he had that bit in 2010 for 'My Name is Hannibal'. I'm listening to Dov's special now, and yeah, it sounds near identical. One definitely ripped off the other.
heh...seeing eddie in sydney in a couple of weeks. outdoor venue on the opera house steps, so not ideal but a little bit different and could be fun on a nice evening. he has been doing this 'force majeure' tour for a couple of years now, initial reviews weren't great but i read it's gotten a lot more slick and he's prob worked some new material in there.
