Yeah I enjoyed the first 20 minutes also, some really funny material, unfortunately I think it went pretty steeply downhill after that.

What has me so in awe of him is he can't be cancelled. He's bigger than comedy and bigger than Netflix. That's what has me so impressed.

The material is a 5. But the balls on this dude is a 10.

So some bloomberg journo did a twitter thread because apparently netflix employees were upset about the trans stuff, but I thought two of the tweets were particularly interesting:

First of all, it's an odd comparison vs an Asian drama, but I'm wondering how you can even work out the "value" of a specific show/special in a subscriber model.

Dane Cook is about as funny as the hemorrhoid draining on my butt right now,but he hooked Kelsi Taylor so he's my favorite comedian right now.

This one also hits the mark:

With this, Sarandos delivered a decisive blow to the words-are-violence crowd. Well-adjusted adults should be able to coexist in a world with people who don't share their tastes, morals, sensibilities, and convictions. They ought to be able to work for a company that platforms content that does not conform to their own personal sense of what is worthy or even prudent. You will not break, or be mowed down in the streets, simply because Chappelle said transgressive things in a Netflix special; the supposition that our world works that way is unfounded.

If you believe in free speech, you unequivocally support others rights to express views you find abhorrent. These purple people don't seem to get that.

Theo Von had a new special on Netflix. I almost dropped out after 5 minutes. I’ll finish it eventually but it’s pretty bad after 15 minutes.

What is it with this particular group of comics. This crew with Theo, Schaub, D’Elia, Callen. They’re all good on podcasts but their specials are ****ing dogshit!! D’Elia’s is probably the worst of the bunch. But Theo’s the most disappointing. Dude is brilliant quite often.

Yeah, certain comics just doing stand up are meh, but put them on a podcast and it's gold.

They would be better off having an hour of podcasting onstage rather than a 20 minute set.

He’s had his moments. I’ve only ever seen highlights from various podcasts, but a few had me on the floor. And his Eminem impression was incredible!

Theo in a small club is great but his specials are all theater style and it doesn’t work for me at all. It’s like he becomes a character rather than just talking.

I haven't watched it yet, but I do like Theo in the pod format, he's funny. But I've never seen his standup. So I'm going in semi open minded. That said I'm not big on the crew and I think Theo is the only funny/talented one of the 4.

But I do also think stand up specials in general are not as effective anymore (especially if you aren't in the s-tier of comics).

And it's mostly because podcasts are killing the mystique of comedians.

It used to be, you saw a guy maybe do two or three sets a year on late night shows or a standup showcase type tv show. And then you saw their hour like maybe once every 5-10 years. That was your full exposure to a comics mind.

Now, if you watch hours upon hours of a comedians podcasts (or specials) you get a feel for how they think, and you can start to predict their comedy with reliable accuracy. And well, no surprise, no comedy. Another factor might be those dudes are all putting a lot of energy into their podcasts instead of their acts. And finally of course everyone is rusty slowly coming out of the pandemic.

I have also noticed I tend to like a comic in either or format, but not always both. There are still guys out there that kill it in casts and on stage. Like my main man Marky Mark Normand! I said he was about to blow up in this thread a while back! Still couldn't pull his own Netflix specsh but at least he'll be on there very shortly.

ps. I did my third set tonight! Comedy!

I hadn't ever really thought D'Elia was that good after seeing a couple of his specials, but then I dropped in on some of his sets at the Comedy Store and now I get his appeal. He's really great at connecting with the crowds and creating a really fun atmosphere. Like he's everyone's goofy friend who is always down to just ham it up and make it a good time for everyone.
I don't think his material is all that strong and he's not what I would call a good comic, but he's a great entertainer.

This is also something that doesn't really translate when watching him on tv. But the energy is palpable in person.

The Cancel nitwits acting precisely how Chappelle says they act is pure gold.

A paid PR firm could not generate this amount of positive feedback.

Meanwhile, just as with Sticks And Stones, the public praises his brilliance while the butthurt groupthink herd insist that what you’re laughing at isn’t funny.
