Your right to free speech does not supercede others rights to enjoy a performance they are paying for.

ugh this country is doomed if more people think like you.

One quote that was attributed to Patrick Henry (but maybe wasn't him that I don't feel like researching on NYE) when I was in school went " I disagree with what you say, but will defend with my life you're right to say it."

Free speech is NOT the eradication of opposing thoughts, it is the allowance of them.

I'm really looking forward to being exposed to a crapton of comics I haven't seen before when netflix releases Comedians of the World which will feature 47 comics from 13 regions of the world in 8 different languages. Being released at Midnight PST tonight.

Bringing this thread back on topic I'll also be seeing closing night of Mike birbiglia's one man show.

nice! i saw it about a year ago and it's very good - no doubt it's only improved since then.

in other birbiglia news, this is an astonishingly good impression.

i'm politically left (Bernie etc) but that is a misappropriation of the jokes. he is basically saying that the world is meaningless and that these college kids are wasting their youths on a political system that they cant actually fix. so instead of getting drunk and having sex they are too involved in politics and take themselves too seriously.

i don't think it is a malicious opinion. it's just his cynical opinion.

but people who are laughing hysterically at these jokes are probably republicans/deplorables or just laughing because it is Louis CK therefore it must be hysterical.

given his life situation, i thought he could focus more on the brutal honesty of that and write some real strong material. this set overall was really quite lazy/terrible/unfunny imho.

the jokes about asian men seemed particularly bad/unfunny.

louis ck's stuff on marriage is some of my all time favorite stand up routines.. but really haven't listened to his entire body of work...

As an aside, that Louis set was announced in the morning, so it wasn’t a surprise show up to the audience.

No one would even be talking about these Louis CK jokes if he wasn't a weird dude who likes asking women if he can jerk off while they watch. His jokes have always been the type where you laugh in spite of the fact you know it's wrong to laugh (I loved his bit about peanut allergies for example). It's the same dark humor that everyone thought was hilarious a few years ago.

Like if you really think Louis doesn't care about school shootings or victims, then you just don't get his humor and should find another comic that is more your style.

I haven’t heard the jokes, but when I first heard the “topics” it certainly made me think his very questionable and/or bad judgment was still with him.

Ultimately jokes should stand on if they are funny or not, even if the subject matter makes people u comfortable. But I agree 100% that he could have went a number of different directions. Introspection was right there for the taking. Louis got the label of being brutally honest about the world and himself. Turns out it is a faux honesty because if he were this person compelled to be honest about himself in his comedy he would have ran head first into talking about himself and what happened. C.K. has exposed himself again.

Well he did do that. And we also have no idea if there are any lawsuits or settlements preventing him from discussing the matter at all, so he can allude to it without actually mentioning it.

Huh? You can say "**** you" and walk out. WTF are you talking about? LOL you think some cop is gonna be waiting outside to arrest you for saying mean things that upset some drunk people at a comedy club?

Should be noted that there's a big difference between a stand up special and a live show. Live shows like the one CK was doing is a work-in-progress show. He's still working out the bugs in the material. Much of it may not even make it to a tight one hour set for the reasons you mention.

Most of the stand-up we watch is through Netflix specials. Those specials are perfectly edited, the crowd is pumped up by some MC, the audio is edited so stuttering and bombed jokes are removed in order to make the material appear smoother. Hell, Bill Burr would lose weight solely for the special and then put it back on. Chris Rock would perform the same show twice and edit together the best responses out of the two for each joke.

Expecting a comic to kill like he's always doing a special is ridiculous.

So yeah I thought it wasn't that great either but it should be expected from a guy still working out material to see if it needed to be kept, edited or chucked out.

Exactly. The people pretending to be offended by CK were never fans of his in the first place. He could have been delivering Seinfeld material and they would have found a reason to be offended.

CK gives less of a **** about those bitches than anybody else in the world.

Somebody mentioned Daniel Sloss's TEDx Talk and it's perfect for this discussion.

Rafiki can't seem to stop calling attention to this topic, even though his posts on it are terrible and hypocritical, as are many others itt.

People have a right to criticize comedy, just as they are allowed to find terrible comedy funny.

Except comedy is subjective. So who gets to judge what is and what isn’t “good comedy”?

Damnit Eddy I have him on ignore, it was so nice. Like how the butthurt can just ignore Louis rather than cry about it endlessly.

But now that I've seen it, the reason that cnn take is so putrid is because it takes this new stance that comedy that hurts feelings shouldn't be performed. Of course that's absurd. The moment you apply that you'll quickly rule out any comedy making fun of Mexicans, short people, fat people, women, the stupid, etc...

This whole idea of dictating what comics can perform and what their fans can enjoy is tyranical. It's a step away from Gestapo type ****.
