bruce willis roast was the worst i've seen, but jeff ross slayed as usual

Anybody going to the Fringe this month?

Tried to watch the Hannah Gadsby special and turned it off after 10 minutes. She seemed like a nice person but I can't stand Identity Comics. By that I mean comics who pick out one part of their identity and make every single ****ing joke about that thing, whether it's their race/religion/nationality/height/weight/orientation/etc.

Maybe it got more interesting after the first 10 minutes but I felt like I would be watching 55 more minutes of nothing but lesbian-from-tasmania jokes.

Just watched that yesterday. It gets a lot deeper about halfway through. Still around the same theme, but more longform, and thought provoking, than jokes.

I was waiting to see a review for that. I put it on and after seeing the line-up and the first 2 minutes maybe I just had to turn it off. It just looked like it wouldn't be funny with the group of people they had.

i haven't seen it, but it's probably the most talked about stand up show of the past 2 years, and that's all because of the second half. first half is just standard whatever stuff. this was covered 50 posts or so back.

you gotta watch jeff ross though. check out ed norton too for the performance. but yes it was 90% terrible, and seemed way over the top with smuttiness compared to the past. that doesn't bother me, but it really wasn't funny.

It transitions into something much heavier and darker later on. It's a really well-constructed special because the transition to that darkness is incremental.

Overall, you have to be in a certain mood to watch it because it isn't going to be hilarious. It's more of a story worth telling with some occasional laughs that taper off as the special progresses.

Honestly, I think it was a mistake for Netflix to call it a stand-up special. It's more of a performance piece rather than a comedy show.

Saw Frankie Boyle last night

Good show but it's a lot of the same topics from different angles. The ending bit killed though.

Russell Howard in less than a half hour.

Agreed. This is the worst one. I didn’t care for Joseph Gordon Levitt as the roast master or most of the guests. I thought Martha Stewart did well again. Milton Howery was great in Get Out but was absolutely terrible on the roast.

It was obvious that it must have a been a pain to edit. They kept trying to ramp up but 80% was unwatchable

Willis himself was one of the worst. Jeff Ross is, of course, a roast genius. There is argument as to whether Greg Giraldo was better ( I dare you to type his name without looking up how to spell it), but Jeff Ross is acknowledged as the best. He has done some roasts while lightly playing the guitar, with one dressed as Prince at the Rob Lowe roast, and Jeff Ross is sneaky good with that thing.

As to the Willis roast, and I did not watch it all, I felt pretty bad for Cybil Sheppard. She was looking rough, got made fun of for womanly things, and isn't old enough to really take it in stride and enjoy the daggers and carnage (nor good looking enough to really shrug them off without some of bitter truth pain). I thought that Bruce Willis's kids in the crowd were fantastic, and showed tremendous good sport and healthy spirit.

On the David Hasselhoff roast, when Jeff Ross said that Hulk Hogan looked like Dog The Pastrami Hunter, it was genius. The way Hulk acknowledged how good it was (his facial expression...like a sigh with a smile...you got me) really let Jeff Ross know that he got him.

the thing about greg giraldo was that he wasn't just great at roasting, his actual stand up was incredible.
i saw him do almost 2hrs at cobbs like 12yrs ago and i was laughing so hard i was afraid i was going to die from lack of oxygen.

i like ross alot but hes pretty much a one trick pony.

the willis roast was terrible.

Giraldo was one of the great stand ups and I think probably underrated. He also did a ton of social commentary that never took away from the quality of the joke.

Giraldo's take down of Dennis Leary on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn is still one of the strongest take down ever. Just a total humiliation.

Camilla Cleese was pretty meh at The Fringe. Reminded me a bit of Amy Schumer with her extensive self-deprecation of her sex life and appearance but not as filthy or focused on her vagina. Jokes seemed to be dark for the sake of being dark rather than having a point.

She was just the first half hour. Some guy I never heard of went next and was much better.

Ari Shaffir is next!

Ari Shaffir was solid unless you have a problem with jokes about Judaism. Of cours, the name of the show is 'Ari Shaffir: Jew'. So you knew what the main topic of the jokes was going to be when you bought tickets.

Some of the crowd was pretty uptight in the beginning but loosened up as the show went on. I don't think those people had seen him before and didn't expect such dark comedy.

Still got 4 more shows to see though 3 are from comics I've already seen.

Finally got to see D'Elia tonight for the first time. He just crushed. Easily top 5-7 sets I've ever seen. And it looked easy for him.

I fell down the rabbit hole the last few nights watching YourMomsHousePodcast. I think I've watched all of them that are on youtube.

I've liked Tom for a while but never really cared for Christina's standup. Their interaction on the podcast is excellent.

Nice to see Daniel Sloss getting his own Netflix special. He's crushed whenever I've seen him and does just that on Netflix.

Giraldo and Patrice O'Neal were both two potential all time greats.

Giraldo was so good. Patrice on O&A is some of my favorite entertainment ever. My favorite off the cuff line Patrice said was that the head of the illuminati looks like the Quaker Oats guy.

Ugh I pray he comes to my own. Aziz doubled down! I have no idea how I feel about it all yet, but I wanna see it.

I saw Brad Williams for his first set as a regular at the Comedy Store. I forgot his name for a month I think. Today I just found him on twitter. Hes one of those people who probably had to be funny for survival because hes really funny.
