Stand up is going to save Netflix.

Will watch the divorced and battered Rock.

I've been divorced and battered since I saw him last. Should relate.

Agree that Rock seemed lower energy. Intentional I'm sure, but it made me miss the prowling stage-preacher element. Agree about the lighting, off-putting. I thought there was a smoke machine at first, but it was just the lights. The whole first half of the show was through a haze. Agree crowd was not that into it for the most part.

I thought the confessional stuff at the end was the best part. Some of the earlier bits felt a little rehashed although still had some funny lines. The bit on religion landed with a thud and probably should have been cut.

Some of his bits on women only caring about how much money a guy makes, or what he can provide to them, seemed out of step with the times.

I am over-criticizing, was still better than 90% of the stand up that's out there. Just not up to his earlier stuff (or the recent Chappelle specials imo).

Rock's eyes would actually glitter. I read that as a description all the time, but he's the only person where I see it happen.

Tamborine was good enough but not awesome compared to a lot of super solid ones released the last 12 months.

And wtf happened to his face?
He could be the next joker with barely any makeup at this point.

I saw him in Chicago a few months ago, a lot of stuff from that set made it into the special. I enjoyed it.

This is a great example of chemistry between two comedians that makes them better than when they are alone.

Don't really care to hear either one do standup and the other podcasts they appear on (SDR podcast and Legion of Skanks podcast) are not that great.

But this format suits them well.

I've seen both of them live and really liked both of their stand up sets. Soder is definitely the stronger traditional comic, but nobody comes close to Big Jay's crowd work.

Funny you mentioned the lighting design. It bothered me the entire time, but I didn't put much thought into it. Now its annoying me long after I watched it.

Got tickets to see Frankie Boyle at the Fringe in Edinburgh and Doug Stanhope this June in Glasgow.

Tickets for Frankie went on sale at 10 AM GMT and 20 minutes later there were 7 seats left for Friday's show. I got one of them. I find it funny that at nearly every show the front row seats are the last ones to go. Everybody who sits there gets absolutely destroyed.

I saw Frankie at last year's Fringe and laughed so much that I had a sore throat after the show was over. He absolutely murdered. His material is very British-centric so it might not appeal to Americans who aren't knowledgeable about British culture and government (though he takes plenty of potshots at America).

He released his last special (Prometheus Volume 1) for free but it's audio only. It's pretty much exactly what I heard at the actual show.

Always told myself that if I went to a Boyle show and was in the front row, I'd wear an eye patch or something, and come up with a crazy fake story about how I lost my eye. Just give him the most monster material ever.

Say that Jimmy Savile molested you. It wouldn't get any more brutal than that.

Went to gig at the Comedy Store where, when the compčre was asking around the audience, it was discovered the whole front row were together on a work night out...from the local McDonald's.

Needless to say, he had an easy job that night.

Saw Joey Diaz's 2016 special after Joe Rogan was going on about how he's the best comedian he's ever seen. I really don't think Rogan is particularly funny but the guy won't stop going on about him. So I thought I'd check him out.

He seems to be the type of guy who's naturally funny. His accent, delivery and appearance all seem to be made for comedy. But if it the material isn't about him, then he really isn't particularly funny. But just based on who he is, he can take things that really aren't funny and make them funny.

So pretty funny but not best ever. There are plenty of comedians funnier than him (Stanhope, Burr, Segura etc) but he's still pretty darn good.

I enjoyed the special a lot. Will be interesting to see what he does on his next one when he will be able to move past the jokes about being new to America.

Those jokes were funny, but the hour felt like he was limiting himself somewhat because he had to get those jokes in.

Gad is obviously better in French. I enjoyed the previous special more than the last since they were overlapping a decent bit and he is more confortables in French.
For anyone interested he has a ton of other spécials not sure if they are available with English subs. We have 4 or 5 on French netflix

Ricky Gervais's special is pretty bad. Like I know there are jokes in it and I see what's supposed to be funny. But they're either predictable or offensive for the sake of being offensive. Constantly overdone topics with jokes done by others which smacks of laziness.

I do like comedians who are dark and twisted like Frankie Boyle but the offensiveness isn't the joke. It's the content that's funny. It just happens to be dark.

Like his co-writer Stephen Merchant (who had his own stand-up special), he's not a natural stand-up. He's a comic actor, not a stand-up comedian.
