So about two weeks ago they started during construction on an apartment next door. It apparently stirred up a bunch of rodents because about two days later I spotted a mouse in the kitchen.

My roomates are these two chicks, so of course I end up having to take care of this problem. I figure I have to go with real traps, as everything I've read on the catch and release ones says that the mice just find their way back by smell.

So I employ these traps and catch a few mice. Well one trap went off yesterday morning while the three of us are eating breakfast. One of the girls immediately goes and checks it and starts basically crying.

Apparently a big mouse (presumed mommy) and this itty bitty baby mouse both got caught in the trap. The problem is the baby is still fairly alive, twitching and squeeking, the trap just having hit it the ass end.

At this point I grab a hammer from the kitchen and crush the baby mouse's head before releasing the traps. My logic was the thing wasn't going to live and it's just suffering so I might as well make its misery quick.

Both my roommates are furious, like won't speak to me angry. They also don't want me setting any more traps preferring to get the sticky traps.

So was there a better line with the baby mouse?

And what do I do to ensure proper pest control?

OMG.....you're a psycho. I would have just taken the mommy and the baby and dumped them in the dumpster outside, let him die on his own. A hammer???? Nutso.

The sticky traps are much more inhumane. The mice aren't coming off those things and they'll slowly starve to death. Girls are dumb, everything else is std.

Yep, definitely better to let him die over the course of a day or two in agonizing pain than put him out of his misery. The nerve of some people!

You were right to kill the mouse. You were wrong to let your roommates know you were doing it.

i barely eat meat, and i think that would be cruel. bleed to death? starve to death? stuck in a cold dumpster with a painful, broken back? come on. given the context, i think anything that results in instant death is the most compassionate move.

smash mice over the head out of sight - everyone is happy.

you did the right thing, stick with the the real traps too.

They want you to be responsible for getting rid of the rodents then do it your way.


bonus points if you actually smashed the baby mouse infront of the already crying girl

next time remove the baby from the trap, rehabilitate it back to life (4-6 weeks) feed it until it grows in to an adult mouse suitable for death then kill it

Probably most +Ev move. At the time my only thought was speed and efficiency. I mean if I was thrashing around in what is essentially a vice with a broken spine I want squished head fast.


That built in house mousetrap where they can only come in one way and exit outside via another is just genius. I don't know why every city residence wouldn't have that.

lol, chicks are so ****ing stupid. They had no problem with you setting a trap that was supposed to kill the mouse, but then when a mouse actually has to die they flip out?

I'd explain to them logically why you had to kill the baby mouse as its the most humane thing to do, then I would explain to them why the sticky traps are a HORRIBLE plan. Hell why not just catch the mouse and put it in a cage and poke it with sticks till it dies, if yer gunna be cruel and inhumane, do it up right!! Now being they are woman, the use of logic will actually have no effect on them whatsoever and they are still gunna be pissed, but whatever, you did the right thing. Let them just go ahead and be stupid. Also I would refuse the sticky traps and tell them its either the traps you have or no traps at all.

I would have taken a picture of the dead baby mouse and got it ironed on a t-shirt and wore it around the house

i see a third option: his traps, or more agreeably humane traps that his roommates purchase.

Please ask them, "Are you guys on your period or something?" Stir the pot for us a little.

Flushing down the toilet isnt exactly humane either.

Basically all these other ways to kill the animal (Sticky traps, just throwing it in the dumpster, flushing it down the toilet) are much crueler to the animal than instant death, they just make it easier on the person doing the killing because taking a hammer to the head of cute little fury animal is a hard thing to do. But in my opinion you are dealing with life, and life is sacred, and if you are going to make the decision to end another creatures life, you owe it to that creature to do it in the best way possible. It doesnt matter if that way is the hardest way for you. If you cant handle what needs to be done, then you shouldnt be making the decision to end somethings life.

You're focusing on your own visceral reactions to watching the mouse die. Down the toilet, away in a dumpster, it doesn't matter how humane the death is as long as you don't have to watch it. Pretending you care about the effect on the animal is pretty transparent.

But a HAMMER???

Yeah, it's the visual that gets me, I admit it. I'm all for shooting the horse when he needs to go down, but a HAMMER??? Blech.
