I honestly can sympathize with golfnutt in the sense that he is providing a (relatively) harm-free service to people who claim they need it. I mean, the support animals are annoying and we all know a large percentage don't really NEED them to function in daily life, but in most cases they are harmless and some people may in fact need them.

It does seem though that there is little-to-no serious evaluation of patients being done at his clinic. The mindset seems to be, "well, they'll just get the paperwork somewhere else, we may as well make the $".

Solution is to a)limit ESAs to dogs only, and make the dogs go through an intense and regulated training program. This would probably weed out a lot of the bulls******s who just want to bring their dog (or pig or peacock) places.

Well you don't have to limit it to dogs if you require actual training. The animals that can't be trained will be naturally weeded out.

And if you require the ESA secretaries to certify an actual diagnosed need, under penalty of perjury, then the fraud will vanish fast.

Great post Revots. I am not in the room when the evaluation is done, but I would agree it is probably minimal. On a society-harm level, if they make a mistake on this, it is absolutely minimal, compared to drugs or guns.

There is the social stigma that it is un-"manly" to need an ESA and "manly" to have a gun.
