In case you hadn't heard, there was an eclipse today. The last time that a total eclipse crossed the entire contiguous US from coast-to-coast was in 1918. We had a total eclipse in Canada in 1979 (that also passed over Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota) which was a really big deal when I was in grade school, and we got to watch it live on TV. Today I only had about 75% coverage here and it barely got darker out, it just seemed a little hazy. A little late to start a thread about this, but hey, I was busy watching an eclipse.

Cell phone cameras aren't very good for eclipse pics, but I got a few that I thought were cool where you can see the sun, which looks pretty full, along with a reflection that shows the actual coverage.

Reflection of eclipse in the soffit:

Reflection just above the sun:

Here it is through a pinhole viewer:

I like this pic even though you can't tell there's an eclipse:

I guess a lot of people took some pics today:

See you in 2024!

Was out all day in the clouds and then cleared up in last 5 minutes before totality, it was stunning to see and my favorite part was when the sun first came back right before needing to stick the glasses back on. Incredible experience.

Bummer, I posted in LC right before seeing this thread. Maybe a mod could move it if they have time.

We were at 90%+ totality. Even that much blocked out and with eclipse glasses, still too bright for me to watch for more than a few seconds at a time.

I found the image on the sidewalk through the trees more interesting. A zillion of these little crescents.

Looked @ Wyo DOT's webcams before & after, traffic seemed busy in one direction (especially for BFE), but not horrendous. Haven't heard if there was gridlock as some were fearing.

this changed my life, I will never be the same.

Do you know why the moon and the star appear to be the same size? The sun is 400 times larger than the moon and the sun is 400 times farther away than the moon. Don't quote me on that, it's just what I heard a few months ago.

Spent the weekend in Tennessee, travelled from Southern Ontario to view the eclipse in totality. So glad I did: I am still trying to come up with the right words to deacribe how I felt when the '2d' image of the sun slowly vanishing behind the moon became a '3d' spherical object with the sun burning bright behind it. I can see how people get addicted to viewing these things - just awesome.

How large is the Sun compared to Earth?
Compared to Earth, the Sun is enormous! It contains 99.86% of all of the mass of the entire Solar System. The Sun is 864,400 miles (1,391,000 kilometers) across. This is about 109 times the diameter of Earth. The Sun weighs about 333,000 times as much as Earth. It is so large that about 1,300,000 planet Earths can fit inside of it. Earth is about the size of an average sunspot!
and the Earth is obv larger than the moon.
Are you talking diameter?

I was in a 90% area this time (amazing how bright it was with only 10% exposed, seemed to effect color as much as anything) but I must say it was nothing compared with the 100% event I saw in Montana in 1979. I wouldn't say it's life changing but you certainly won't ever forget. Great to see other people experiencing a similar effect. Next solar in this region is in 2771... Feel blessed to have seen 2 in my life. Love that video from the plane.

This was a great blast from the past.

Don't know how or what happened here but this turned out pretty cool. (I think I might have been trying selfie mode.)

Pinhole viewer worked well to track the progress.

Was really awe inspiring. Coolest thing I've ever seen. 18 months ago I talked my mom into booking her timeshare rooms at the Wyndham Smoky Mountain resort in Tennessee just for this event. We had stayed here a couple times before so I figured we could make the eclipse a part of our vacation. We took the trip from Pennsylvania and it was absolutely worth the drive.

Was a little hot, but we had perfectly clear skies all day. I knew it got cooler during totality, but it was also noticeably cooler ~10-15 minutes beforehand and afterwards. I snapped this quick picture at the start of it but my phone couldn't resolve a clear shot during totality.

We were down there with a few aunts and uncles who live in the Cincinnati area and we were talking about what we should do for the April 2024. One of my uncles lives directly in the totality path for that one.

I specifically flew from Portland to Atlanta Delta 2466 to view this. Although my picks aren't the best, they are still pretty good. I used my eclipse glasses and placed them over my camera lens. Pilot did some S-turns to accommodate viewing!

Took my pops!

Pre-Eclipse

Here is our route that followed the eclipse.

This is just a selection of the best ones. Was tough to capture photos in route!

So many neat photos in this thread Even a special appearance by ScreaminAsian That video's amazing!

Was posting in a thread in the Science section, but all my stuff comes from online - didn't have any of the special equipment, although my area only had something like 70% coverage ... guess maybe today will be a practice run for 2024?

Looks like they already have the maps out for the next one

And there was this neat little piece of trivia underneath the calendar:

May have to pick up a pair of those glasses for next time, while it's closer to my neck of the woods - it sounds like everybody had fun today

Drove down to small town Marion KY with some friends into the heart of 100% totality. LondonBroil nailed it:

Clouds started to roll in about an hour before, but there was a little gap, maybe 15 seconds of the full corona, ****ing incredible and well worth the day on it's own. Two minutes of night during the day with the crickets chirping was just icing on the cake.

I was in SC. It was amazing. Sucks it was only 2 minutes. But it was eerie as **** the last 5-10 min before totality. The sun was too bright to look at but the sunlight was dim enough to make automatic lights go on.

During the totality part, the sky became a shade of purple I had never seen before. The 360 degree horizon was orange like a sunrise. Then there were these weird light waves dancing on the ground. Apparently these are really hard to document with a camera but along w/ the purple sky it was like some psychedelic trip. The sun itself looked like a black hole surrounded by the corona. Even the corona on it's own is bright as ****.

I now understand why in ancient times, total solar eclipses would freak people the **** out. I'd probably think something was eating the sun too. It's that dramatic.
