That sounds promising. I know Caroni is pretty much the Rolls Royce of rum, so it wasn't something I expected I was gonna taste in the foreseeable future, but I've ordered the tasting set (along with a bottle of Goslings Black Seal Rum) now so I will soon enough.
The rum of today is Pixan Solera Especial, from Mexico (40%). There was a Pixan last year, too, though it was called 8 años. A bit of googling tells me there's a 6 and 8 year Solera Especial version, so I assume it a different rum and hope that they haven't been cheeky and just changed the sticker.
It has a darkish golden color, the nose is very nice, fresh, sweetly, cirtrussy, maybe, it's very rich.
The taste is good, a little soft at first but there's a lot of funk going on, many different impressions that's a little difficult to pinpoint. Wood, fruityness, it's a little sweet but not sugar sweet, though I think there is added a bit of sugar, it's smooth but not dull, accompanied by a nice lingering warmth. Aftertaste is also wood and fruity and lasts for a while.
Pretty solid glass of rum, I was a little disappointed when I saw it was a brand from last year that I thought wasn't particularly great, but this one is quite nice. 8/10.
I've discovered that there's an overview in the calendar of all the different countries from which there is rum included.
It's comprised of many of the usual suspects when it comes to rum production. Nothing quite as obscure as Nepal last year, but I'm looking forward to seeing which American and Australian rums are included.
