much like how some of us would recoil in horror if someone ordered a nice single malt with the express purpose of mixing it with a diet coke
What about a nice blended whiskey?

I'm going to check out the rum streets next time I'm at a good liquor store thanks to this thread.
Please do and report back your findings.

Just made simple syrup (1:1) for tomorrow's rum day. Impatient as I am I couldn't help myself and I had to make a Ti' punch to try it. And man is that delicious. Sweet and sour, tastes very good and is very refreshing, it hits the spot. I mixed 1/3 of syrup, lime juice and rum each.

I used the doorly's 5 rum and it does well in this cocktail, although it does get reduced to a secondary role.* I think a rum with more taste complexity could be great to try as well, so that the nuances will remain without being overpowered by the sweet/sour taste. I'm gonna try to make it with Smith & Cross Jamaican rum (57%) tomorrow just to see what that does to it. Very delicious drink.

*I tried adding a little more rum after I drank some of it, but I think that compromises the power and freshness and is a very different experience, would probably try to see outcome from using other Rums before doing that again.

Glad you liked it. Came across Ti Punch at a bar that specializes in period cocktails and was blown away. Stopped at the store on the way home to buy some limes and my sister-in-law and I got destroyed on them, trying them with various rums from my collection, while my wife laughed at us.

Sadly, we got too drunk to remember which rum won the competition.

Dear God I'm hungover today.

Yesterday was a success. We got through tasting all of these Rums and enjoyed a number of cocktails, enough to get through my >3/4 full Smith & Cross bottle.

I made Ti punch from Smith&Cross and it feels like I've found the holy grail. This is absurdly good, it's a mouth orgasm. This more powerful rum give it so much taste and funk while still having that strong sweet and sour taste. The first thing I did this morning was make one with the last bit of rum in the bottle.

We also made quite a few painkillers using this recipe: https://www.thespruceeats.com/painki...-recipe-760473 except we used a little less rum (smith & Cross) and I had made the mistake of buying coconut milk instead of creme. Nevertheless, an amazingly tasty drink, much better than I had anticipated. We ended up drinking quite a few of them. Also made pina coladas, but we ended up just drinking one of those and then going back to painkillers.

For drinking it straight, the rums we went back to after getting through them all were the two El dorados and the ron quorhum.

Bumbu rum from Barbados is the best spiced rum there is. If you try it and disagree we can’t be friends. The best cocktail for it is the Cable Car:
1.5 oz Bumbu
.75 oz Cointreau (or your preferred Orange liqueur, I like Curacao but you do you)
1 oz simple syrup
.5 oz lemon juice

Shake vigorously in ice, serve in a coupe. If you are serving someone you want to sleep with, coat rim in sugar. Drink 3 or 4. It’s my wife’s favorite cocktail.

For aged rums, I think you can’t beat Zacapa XO, but the 23 is great if you don’t want to sell a kidney.

Also, totally with you on the El Dorados. A very solid sipping rum. If you like those, you might seek out the aged Don Q rums from Puerto Rico, which have a similar profile and are dangerously smooth. The Añejo and Gran Añejo are the ones you want. Should be about the same price point.

Gonna have to try cable car, sounds delicious.

Bumbu is already on my rather long list of rums I need to get my hands on =)

Haven't had a Cable Car there in years, but the Bellagio used to rim the glass with sugar / cinnamon mix. Ideal.

Which reminds me of another great rum drink I used to get in Hawaii, a melontini. Equal part spiced rum and Midori, served up, with a cinnamon (no sugar) rim and a fresh pineapple spear garnish.

Got my hands on this rum, Plantation 20th Anniversary XO.

It's definitely one of the more unusual rum experiences I've had. I have the Plantation Xaymaca Dry as well but it's much different.

It kind of reminds me of Danish christmas pastries for some reason, probably because of cinnamon notes in smell and taste. The "basis" is similar to my other (limited) Plantation experience, but there's cinnamon and other sweet spices and dark tastes like toffee and chocolate and it's much darker and less of an alcohol taste. There's some fruitiness as well. A really rich rum with a good lingering taste.

A complex and delicious rum, definitely more complex than most rums I've had. I would probably not serve this for people who aren't into alcohol/are trying rum for the first time, but that would probably go for any Plantation Rum as it's just a different experience iyam. But it really is delicious, I think I'll have another glass when I'm done with this one :P.

Another note: the Doorly 5 year is growing on me. I thought it was gonna be an "everyday-dram"-rum but it tastes better now than when I first tried it imo, more sharp and clear.

Arr me hearties!

Let it be known that I have not forgotten about this thread, or, indeed, rum.

I've been quietly depleting my rum reserves and will begin buying a lot of new stuff over the next couple of months I reckon.

I've ordered 2 bottles, El Dorado 8, and one Ron Millionario 15 Solera, of which I've heard a lot of positives.

I have fallen completely in love with El Dorado 15. It is absolutely delicious and I think that might be the first rum that I will keep buying the same bottle of. I love everything about it (the slight vanilla tint gives my tastebuds an orgasm) and it has everything I want from a rum.

For december I have ordered a rum Christmas calendar ("24 days of rum"), and I expect to make verdicts on them in this thread to some extent.

Tonight I will be enjoying this glass of Ron Quorhom. I've read reviews referring to it as the best rum in the world at its price - and I definitely like it and find it delicious - but I wouldn't mind if it was magically turned to El Dorado 15 overnight.

I got my new bottles this week, and I've already drank like half of the millionario 15, it is super delicious.

The package is super ugle and it has a screw cap, which imo is just a no-no, and it makes it look kinda cheap, because every other screw cap rum I have are $30-or-less Rums.

Nonetheless it is very delicious, and a perfect first rum for someone who wants to drink great rum but are afraid to order something wrong (I saw a page refer to it as a perfect "women's rum" because of its sweetness). But it is certainly super enjoyable to anyone who likes good rum, and I could drink this every day and never get tired of it (which I could of the Puntacaña, another sweet rum). It's just a great rum, a 9/10 imo. Does everything I want and more, but it also doesn't give me anything shockingly surprisingly that would make me say this is the best I've ever had.

I've been tasting the 8 years El Dorado and while I think it can grow on me, it's definitely a massive step down from the 12 or 15 in terms of quality, and there's definitely more of an alcohol taste. But I feel like it could grown on me and it's more complex than the Doorly's I had, so I will wait with my final judgment. First impression, though, is: invest those extra money in the 12 or 15 Rums if you want a great experience.

The reason thread was dead for a while is I usually use my betting profits for rum and I had a rough start to the season. Been on a solid run recently and have been investing accordingly. Have Ron De Jeremy XO incoming along with St. Lucia's Chairman's Reserve rum ordered, I've heard the latter is a real value rum, so I'll try it in the search for the GOAT cheap rum. Jeremy is just because, well, I HAVE to try that, obviously.

But for now, cheers in magnificent millionario, I will recommend this strongly, both to rum enthusiasts and especially to rum newcomers. This is a rum everyone will like, and similarly, if you don't like this rum, you're not going to like most rum, I reckon (and even then, there will be some Rums for you, because rum spans extremely broadly).

I received my rum Christmas calendar today so I've begun catching up. I'll try to rate them all itt. It isn't fair to the Rums to judge them from 2 cL, but I'll do it anyways #noshame.

I've also gotten Ron de Jeremy and St Lucia reserve and have enjoyed both and would rate them about 7.5-8/10, with RdJ being higher. RdJ is kinda similar to diplomatico, but without the citrus and less fruity, which I like about the diplo. Still a tasty rum that I consider if I want to enjoy a glass of good rum, and the packaging/black matte bottle/Ron Jeremy stamp makes a pretty ace packaging.

St Lucia is a cheap rum but doesn't taste like it. It has a rich, round taste (no sugar added), very smoky and oak-y, and also let's you taste the alcohol. Not my favourite style, but I like it and it's a quality product, especially considering the price. I'm not big on whisky, but I think you'd enjoy this if you're a whisky fan.

Onwards to the calendar Rums

1. Mount Gay xo

A decent glass of rum, though it wouldn't be my first choice if I wanted a glass. Taste is sharp and powerful, rich and round, but it doesn't wow me. I think there are more interesting options in that price range, but it may be the kind of rum that grows on you. 6.5/10

2. Ron Millionario 10th Anniversario

Pleasently surprised to unpack this. This was the first "real" rum I ever bought. It was for a cocktail night with my study group where we each brought one drink we'd make, mine was Dark n Stormy, and they were a big hit. The rum works great on its own as well. Nice complexity and sweet taste, but a less "complete" deliciousness than the 15 solera. 8/10

3. Pusser's rum gunpowder proof

A strong rum at 54.5%, but surprisingly drinkable. The smell is very rich and complex but also soft. I can't describe it any other way, but smells fantastic. Complex taste and spice which diminishes some of the alcohol taste, so when it hits the taste buds it's like an explosion. Far more drinkable pure than Smith & Cross imo, and I can see it working amazingly well in most drinks too. I'm gonna order one of these in the immediate future I can tell. 9/10

Nice write-ups. I honestly wasn't expecting RdJ to be any good. I may have to try the St. Lucia as well, as I am a whiskey guy.

Regular Prusser's tastes way too molassesy for my taste. I assume this is even more so?

Thanks! I had read that the RdJ was solid before I ordered it, but you never know with those "gimmick" Rums. I recall reading somewhere that there was a Peaky Blinders rum which was an exact copy of another, cheap rum (in the same bottle, even) but the label made it cost another €30, lol. Glad it wasn't the case with this one.

I can't compare the Pussers as I haven't tried the other one, but this was definitely quite molassey. I think the thick molasses play a part in diminishing the alcohol taste and gives it more of the almost gooey texture which is rich, spicy, sweet and complex. That works well because of how powerful and sharp it is, I can imagine it being a little nauseating without the sharpness to offset some of the thick, gooey experience. If you don't like the molasses feeling at all it maybe isn't for you, but there was so much power behind that it didn't feel excessive to me.
I have ordered one today so I'll try it again shortly (I also ordered Dos Maderas 5+5).

In the meantime I've caught up on my calendar.

4. Chamarel Single Estate. There's no indication of which rum it specifically is on the label sticker, but at 41% it's likely to be a VSOP, Googling tells me.

I've read that this is essentially rhum Agricole (I haven't tried that before), except they can't call it so because of where it's made.
I'm not a big fan of the smell to be quite frank, it's synthetic and a little all over the place in a sense, but the taste is good, it "evolves" a lot and the aftertaste is rich and powerful, but without an alcohol taste. It's a little difficult to judge as I can't say what characteristics is this rum specifically has and which ones are more broad for Agricole. I give it 7/10 for just how much I like it without considering anything else.

5. Santos Dumont XO

Never heard of this before. It's a rum from Brazil (I forgot to mention that each rum on the calendar is from a unique country).

Very delicious smell, it's sweet, smooth but also sharp and fruity. It smells amazing, it makes me wanna both smell it for an hour, but also to taste it.

Very honeysweet and rich taste, a lot of fruityness. There's also some things I can't quite tell what is, but which gives it a lot of depth and makes the aftertaste so much more interesting than if it had just been sweet. For a sweet rum, this has it all in my opinion, and the balance in the taste and smell is just amazing. 9/10

I'm afraid not. It's made by a Danish company, I can find it on UK Amazon and several other web shops, but none that ship to America.
