I'm looking at getting the El Dorado 12 yr as my next rum to try. Is there anything I should look out for in terms of similarities with Plantation or am I good to go and it is back to the reliable Appleton, Mount Gay, etc. range tastes?

Those are very different rums. Appleton is a Jamaican, with the traditional harsh alcohol-forward flavor that implies, imo. If you are OK with Bundy, though, I suppose it seems smooth. Mount Gay is from Barbados and is much more light and floral.

El Dorado 12 is darker than Mt. Gay, but sweeter than Appleton. I don't recall it having that long vanilla finish that you disliked in the Plantation, but it definitely isn't the pure alcohol finish of Appleton. It might have a hint of vanilla, but to me burnt sugar dominates.

El Dorado 12 has some vanilla for sure, but it's not excessive imo.

Ordered a bottle of Rhum JM blanc 50%, can't wait to drink ti' punch.

Next rum tasting will be a Worthy Park tasting, so Jamaican. I had hoped it would have been rum from different Jamaican distilleries, as it'll now probably be fairly similar rums as was the case with Foursquare, but it should still be good.

I don’t know for sure as Plantation sources from a lot of countries and places but I would think El Dorado 12 will be closer Plantation than something a little more funky like Appleton. Also I’m quite certain El Dorado and Plantation add sugar while Appleton and Mount Gay being from Jamaica and Barbados don’t.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Looks like I'll be avoiding then even though I did want to try it.

Mount Gay is my favourite stable but I still drink Appleton probably more so for nostalgic reasons than taste over Mount Gay as it was my gateway rum away from Bundy.

Appleton and most Jamaican rums are known for a “Jamaican Funk”, which some don’t like, I personally love it. I’ve only had the 12 year but that doesn’t taste harsh or alcohol forward, maybe the younger non age stated is like that?

My Gay Special Reserve has been my favorite non-expensive sipping rum for a long time.

They discontinued it a while back and introduced a ‘white’ rum which is just generic clear rum.

Aloha Liquors in Carson City had a case and I took it all.

Down to the last three.

Try to use it sparingly!

It’s really good stuff.

Hint of coconut, toffee, banana and molasses.

I’d also love to get my hands on a few more bottles of this one that you usually needed to special order; I like the Eclipse and the Aged but IMO the Mt Gay folks discontinued their two best products.

We ran out of Gosling's Black Seal so I treated myself to a Zacapa 23, I don't know much about this stuff, hardly a connoisseur(Spelled correctly on the second try!) but I am impressed by this stuff so far.
Went with it after reading this "guide"/partial advertisement
https://www.thespruceeats.com/popula...-of-rum-759209

Also grabbed a bottle of the Tree House Richley Rum

Though I've only had it in mojitos and rum runners so I really have nothing to say Fun label though

Fun fact: Back in the first post-BF winter when we decided to grind a couple month in Rosarito Beach, my first purchase at Mexican-Walmart was a bottle of Zacapa 23 for $20 or $25. Felt like I made a total steal.

I'm curious about that house rum. Are they buying cheap rum to somehow enhance it at their bar and then sell it under their own label? Our barkeeper does his own blends like the aforementioned Plantation/Union55 blend and various infusions for his signature cocktails but I've never considered the possibility to sell that stuff.

I don't know, but this is Tree House. They're maniacs. They also do coffee, an agricultural share, and it's not as much a "bar" as it is their sole place to buy their beer. They don't distribute, so yes you can go and get 2 beers on tap(max) but mostly can sales. It's kind of a weird cult type place.

I never knew of this song until just now. It's pretty cheesy in the USA #n country way, but thought of this thread.

Finally finished my Santa Teresa Gran Reserva.

It was a real nice rum. Light with a nice sweetness but not overly so.

Bought this over New Years 1996/97 on my first real trip anywhere outside the US, Isla Margarita in Venezuela. Found it to be a really good rum to just sip on occasionally.

This looks interesting is it actual sugar cane and not molasses or the by products of sugar cane production? Like a French rhum agricole?

The way it was explained to me years ago (I was working on a project in the Caribbean) that it’s just rum and that they were only allowed to label it as ‘brandy’ for sale in the Caribbean. Anywhere else it was labeled ‘Sugar Cane Rum’. Some folks claim it’s the same as what they now sell as ‘Mt Gay Aged Rum’ but I think it was much tastier.

Here are two comments I found at Rum Ratings:

Mount Gay Sugarcane Brandy is not brandy but a rum, and is now discontinued by the distillery. The term "brandy" has something to do with the distillation process, but by law this term cannot be used in the United States.”

“Distilled using fermented molasses in used whiskey and bourbon barrels, this rum really satisfies. Hard to find rum along with its predecessor simply called sugar cane rum.
Smooth with notes of pear and apple, warm baking spices with hints of woody expressions.
Enjoyed this neat or it could be mixed! Definitely the most underrated rum in the Mount Gay line of nice rums.”

I think it is two years which is surprising considering how smooth it is.

Some say there’s a slight ‘burn’ to it but I never noticed and love to sip it on the rocks.

Here’s a comment from Rum Ratings:

Straw colored rum that has aged for 2 years. Smooth for the amount of time in barrels, this rum has hints of molasses, nuts, banana and vanilla. Just a touch of a burn from the spiciness and alcohol.”

I’ve never considered this one a ‘spiced’ rum. If it is it’s very subtle and not the usual.

No idea.

The article says the brand name he chose (J'Ouvert) could be offensive to some people from Trinidad/Tobago because (I guess) it’s the name of a local festival.

Can I ask about your set-up? You just drink rum in the street with a table set up? That is pretty mad and I'm envious of your standing in the street.

Havana Club is indeed a very fine rum for those who like the light Cuban style. I believe that it is, unfortunately, still embargoed in USA#9. I find the Anejo nice, but the 15 year is much better, imo.
