What longtime goals or hopes for the future have you had that, on reflection, will probably never happen?

The point isn't to motivate you to reach your goal. You've already lost. The point is to motivate others. So what was the goal, how long did you have it, and what derailed you?

Winner is whomever struggled the longest to obtain something that is now out of reach and/or worked the hardest to get the least.

I tried really, really hard to find the name of a tune I heard in an advertisement. I went so far as to phone up the company being advertised, asked some friends who work at an advertising company, re-made the tune from memory and posted it to around a dozen message boards asking about it, offered a cash prize on a question/answer website, and talked about it to all my friends and asked them to help.

I've had this goal for around two years now, and I have not given up yet. But the window of opportunity may be quickly closing.

this thread reminds me of some of my biggest mistakes and regrets in life.
my biggest regret is not eating that guy's entire slice of apple pie because he was in the bathroom for at least another five minutes.

Getting a PhD. If you get involved in higher education in your 20's and have any academic ambition at all, push through and get the doctorate while you're young.

I guess it's still possible for me to go back. You never know.

I know this isn't really the point of the thread but every day I get older I sometimes get depressed that there's another thing to cross of the list of things that I will not be the youngest person to ever accomplish. But usually none of the things are anything that I have any interest in doing so it's kind of stupid, I just wish that I had had the interest/motivation to do something remarkable at a young age.

Running a Marathon. After my first 5k I decided I wanted to run a Marathon, I worked on it and did a 10k but that absolutely murdered my hips and knees. I have a family history of hip and knee problems, not to mention I have short legs and big boobs, I'm just not made to run. I decided to spare myself from early arthritis and give up on running.

Being on the first manned mission to mars. My eyes are too bad for me to fly, so I didn't go into the air force, which makes it a million times harder to be an astronaut.

But my dream of being a movie star is still on track, so I suppose it all balances out.
