Ketel absolut and one other were about even. Two take home messages from our experiment: all were drinkable except the goose, which tasted like varnish; we were shocked that smirnov was the unanimous fav-it and the bootleg Russian one were a notch better than the others.

Saw the link to this thread on another forum. With Sucker's confirmation post I'm now saving around $2000 for my lifetime so I'm taking the day off.

PS Did anyone ever blind taste Skyy? This is cheap at Costco but top shelf (or equal to Greg Goose) in most bars. Skyy is my "bang for the buck" brand when I drink at home but I may have been unduly influenced by opinion.

fyp.

Also, while I'm not surprised that Smirnoff won, I can't stand the stuff. I always feel like **** after drinking it, which doesn't happen when drinking other vodkas, cheap or not. I will choose Seagram's, Fleischmann's, UV, Finlandia, Fris or any number of other mid-priced vodkas in order to avoid the 'noff.

excellent work, sir. was there any palette cleanse in between drinks?

also, wouldn't a better way to test whether rain was terrible would be to give half the people rain and half some other vodka?

all in the interest of science.

Yeah, any more than 7 and it would have started to be too much. One, from getting drunk ldo, two, it's expensive, and three, just needing to remember back to how you liked the first vodka compared to the second compared to the twelfth is tough enough that you'd get worse results even if you were spitting out the vodka each time.

I've had Absolute neat, and to my memory, it tasted worse than any vodka we had in this test, but, sure, it was a while back and not as tightly controlled as this. I see the argument for more of the popular brands, but I think that going looking for some winners in brands that don't spend so much money on marketing can be fruitful. That's how I found Cruzan rum. It doesn't have nearly the name of Bacardi and it costs less, but it's way better quality.

Well, then the one to look up is Monopolowa. Nearly as tasty as Smirnoff, a buck less, and, well, not Smirnoff.

We didn't have any ceremonious palette cleansing, but we were munching on pretzels and sipping water as we went.

Pretty sure this is just people regurgitating myths they've heard before. Cheap vodka gives people hangovers because it's not distilled adequately. Smirnoff is (you can read about their process online). So whenever someone says Smirnoff gives them a headache, I tend to just dismiss it.

I do some tasting from time to time with friends as well, but we haven't done it blind...very fun to see your results.

If anyone does vodkas again in the future, another interesting variation to throw into the tasting options is an extra filtered version of one of the vodkas you include (such as smirnoff).

Some say that filtering low end vodkas will result in a top shelf quality vodka, but that's largely BS. However, it does distinctly change the taste of that vodka, which is interesting to experience.

edit: and by "extra filtered version", I mean literally running the vodka through a brita water filter 4-5 times.

You need to do this for other drinks as well.

Yes but drink Smirnoff all night, measure the hangover. Then drink Goos all night, measure the hangover.

There's the big difference imo.

Belvedere is Polish, so I'm cool with it. Thats what I buy for someone when I stay at their place for a couple days or whatever.

Whenever I go out, I always get Absolut on the rocks, although I guess I don't really have reason to. I should probably do one of these taste tests some afternoon, but finding 5 or 6 friends to drink straight vodka with me for science might be an issue with my crowd.

This is impossible to quantify or control adequatley, you realize.

That's the plan. Next on the docket is probably Cabernet Sauvignon, then maybe rum.

You must not read the NC thread, because we covered this. If you run vodka through a Brita filter that's been used for water, it waters down your vodka.

FWIW i was drinking Smirnoff all last Saturday with the Romanians downstairs (sa-na-ta-té is cheers btw) and felt pretty good Sunday.

I can't imagine wanting to spend all day drinking Grey Goose...

I never said run vodka through a filter that's been used. When I've done this, it's been with new filters.

I drank 12 shots of Smirnoff in 70 minutes and had a 4 hangover.
The next weekend I had 18 shots of grey goose in 100 minutes and had a 7 hangover.

The NY Times vodka taste test in 2005 also scored Smirnoff 1st:

At the 2009 San Francisco Spirits Competition that just happened a few days ago Dry Fly was rated best but Smirnoff got a double gold medal

We still aren't sure that filtering does not remove some of the alcohol.
