To be fair olive oil has gotten a lot more expensive since OP. But yeah if you cook 80% of your meals at home it's not completely unreasonable, though you should still be able to get it down to $10 by buying in bulk or substituting veggie/canola oil when applicable.

65k can get you a 2500 sf house and plenty left over in OHIO

I gave up a contracting job that paid xx,xxx a month after taxes but with no benefits because the commute was 1 hr to in the morning (I'd leave super early in the morning) and 1.5 hours on the way back. I'm 10x happier with less pay and a super short commute with remote work options.

If I had a family to support I'd still do it but I dreaded that drive every time I'd go to sleep the night before. If you start worrying about going in the night before it's time to look for something else. Life is too short for that, being in LA didn't help matters.

65k is enough even in LA as long as you are constantly buying the latest tech gadgets, over paying for phone/internet/cable, buying an over priced new car that requires tons of maintenance and gets poor mileage.

I've been wanting a tesla for some time and though I could afford it I'm still putting around in my 8 year old Toyota. Gets good mileage, maintenance is very low, insurance and registration is next to nothing.

I know people who make a 1/4 complaining about expenses but yet drive a nice new euro car, pay over 500 for registration and probably much more in insurance because the car is new. Live downtown, have macbooks when all they do surf facebook and email (a computer 1/10 the cost does the same thing).

65k / year is poor, I make 90k and I'm considering myself poor.

My laptop is probably better than a lot of servers but I do run a lot of development machines inside of it. The 3 SSDs and ram at the time were quite a bit but since it's used for work it was deductible.

As for most people like my SO and my mom a pc for ~$100 on CL was fine for their FB, instagram, Youtube, email, it does everything they need. I did upgrade them to small SSD for the OS and kept the original drive to store files and media.

Some in here claims they work 60 hours a week ? that`s crazy no matter how much you earn..

Here in Denmark no sane person works more than 34-37 hours a week to full pay and 6 weeks holiday a year.

I think OP is talking American dollars though. Chinese dollars likely are worth less than American dollars.

I went back to the start of the thread which was mostly about the subject of actual money that makes it to your account which seems to be what a lot of posts are still about.

On a different note, I work 40 hours a week and get about 10 weeks of holidays a year, wouldn't want to have it any other way tbh.

Could anyone making 90k+ break down on what they are spending their money on ? I have a hard time imagining it unless you have a new sick ride and a mansion in SF (or wherever).

Yeah, every time this thread was brought up I thought the OP said $60 or so per month for olive oil. $20 is a little high, but I bet some of the regulars in the cook everything else thread spend that amount or more.

It is very real. #1 in the nation for rental prices (and Oakland is 5th for February apparently and San Jose 6th.). Negotiate high.

Plus don't forget state income tax.
